I could understand a 14 team league but 20?? I imagine this is being suggested from a Welsh angle as the 4 Welsh Regions haven't really prospered in their current league. |

Where's the money coming from?
It won't be the RFU or WRU!

Let's say the Welsh regions sell their shares of the URC (big if). Why can't they then merge with English clubs to form a league?
The TV deals move with the clubs. Ditto sponsors. All theoretical waffle of course but Paul Rees is putting his name to it in The Rugby Paper.

If the TV income cannot support 10 England clubs and four Welsh regions, how is it going to support 20. It is, as ever, financial illiterates living in cloud-cuckoo-land. However, it is clearly a topic being actively discussed. And the Championship clubs must realise that there are other discussions, and the Premiership clubs have no interest in anything other than themselves.

Perhaps the four Welsh regions are buying a franchise in Prem2?

How many discussions need to take place before those involved finally realise that there isn't enough interest in club rugby (or district rugby in Wales) to support any of these pipedreams?
Until then it's just like rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic whilst the ship sinks. Not that I care a jot, bring on the iceberg. The National League will be well clear and that's where real rugby is being played nowadays.

One could increase the interest, but that would require hard work, not simply moving deckchairs.

What I can see eventually happening as part of the CVC involvement is a streamlined British and Irish League and a second tier Anglo Welsh league involving those clubs not in the B&I League.

I guess the idea is that there'd be 2 leagues of 10, wouldn't it, along the lines of the long-discussed (but little-confirmed) Prem 1/Prem 2 arrangement? In either scenario, holding one's breath is not recommended...

Totally agree about Premiership clubs only thinking about themselves …. some of the people bank rolling these clubs did not get to the top of their businesses being NICE …. they are ruthless |
