Good news for the Championship, but devastating for those clubs below Level 2 Confused

Wouldn't ít of been  nice if the RFU had announced its plans to support the junior game first, in stead of tossing a hand grenade in the room, locking the door and walking away.

RFU has been reducing support for community clubs for some time, so will some financial help be available? Don’t suppose so.

It's not cancelling rugby full stop, just the competitive leagues, which could fall apart once people start testing for covid. Friendly rugby under the modified laws can still be played once the Government says so..

Unless the RFU has found a

1. large sponsor for the Championship
2. a pot of gold it had hidden
3. a way to get 2,500 to 3,000 people into Goldington Road

I don't see us starting in January.

Still as clear as mud about the Championship

In fact has any press release from the RFU mentioned us specifically?

57 old baked beans springs to mind

The older I get, the more the RFU leave me confused.

Yes, the email from the RFU specifically mentions the Championship starting in January under the Elite Player Approach.

The RFU and the NCA are working on a local competition basis fir Community Clubs (Level 3 down) to be played under whatever laws they can get the Government to agree to, possibly the adaptations used in the Allianz league. They have also asked the Government for funding similar to that given to non-League soccer. All Clubs completed a Survey showing their potential loss this season.

The RFU is working really hard on our behalf but without an effective Test and Trace system much of our future protection is missing.

“Championship remains on course to commence in January 2021”.

Oh really - is the RFU going to fully fund Championship clubs that have virtually no income between now and January 2021 to retain professional squads? Players will not play for no income in the Championship.

Must maintain some form of resemblance of normality/hope, otherwise Saracens will be cut adrift for 2 seasons.

Watch Out - The Scottish Phoenix Club is on the Up!!

Had a dream last night. The RFU found funds for the Championship, as they stood alongside a Unicorn and a Pot of Gold. That dream makes more sense To me than this idea of a xx game season that is starting in January.

The older I get, the more the RFU leave me confused.

But of course there will be a Championship season, as otherwise Saracens cannot win it.

Or the "Pools Panel" will simply decide that they would win it and promote them anyway.

I have never believe the Cheats will ever set foot in the Championship.

Well that as put an end to your "3 games in Dec!!"

After last nights news out of 10 which Id say the RFU and NCA knew about 24 hours before. You don't get any rugby till Feb at least no matter what style.

The NCA from what I understand, gave clubs an assurance of a 10 week pre season block
With Nov being locked down that could not happen and start in Jan, hence the action that was taken.
If they had explained that it might have gone down better and people would have seen the reason. Or even if they had waited till today and then explained the reason why!

I have a feeling that the big money in rugby will evaporate, sponsors will be a rare beast and it won't be just the Championship that won't have money to pay players. Assets are the only thing that will see some sides survive, those who like the franchises in Scotland, Wales and Ireland could be the biggest hit if their RFU's are in the same financial mess that England's is.

The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) announced a loss of £5.3m in its annual report, which it says is a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. WRU turnover in 2019-20 was £79.9m, down from £90m in the previous year.

An article in today’s Rugby Paper suggests that the RFU are in the worst state of all, particularly when compared where they used to be.

I have a real fear for the future of the game, particularly at Community level.

Should there ever be a re-start, are the players still going to be there and will they still be willing to get involved and take part?

What happens if they have all simply moved on to do other things?

And, what will happen to the many thousands of volunteers who give up their time every week?

Are they too still going to be there?

By the time the 21/22 season comes round (if it ever does get off the ground) lots of players will not have played for 18 months and that is a long time, particularly if you are getting on a bit.  Indeed, as an a volunteer/general dogs body myself, will my own interest be maintained for that length of time?

By the time project restart does get eventually off the ground, the sporting landscape is going to look a lot different than it has done in recent times.

There was a question last week in the Daily Mirror, in their daily Sports Quiz in the back pages.

Q: What Premiership club does Owen Farrell play for?

My answer was "None, he plays for a Championship club".
