Well, lots of reports that next season the Championships funding will be halved which could be catastrophic for some of the clubs in the Championship. Will there suddenly be lots of players no longer contracted? Will the RFU continue this and cut Nat 1 funding in half? Surely this is ring-fencing by the back door with a good chance the Premiership A League will become the de facto 2nd division?

I think the funding cut will lead to a significant number of foreign players leaving the Championship and journeymen retiring, although not welcome the cut in funding, it might well reward well run clubs with loyal, well supported players. It might also create a sugar daddy league!!!!

Duncang, what Nat 1 funding? Lots more players will have to get full time jobs away from rugby and see rugby money as a nice top up rather than a main wage. The A league is a joke. One London Prem club had 8 'guest' players to get a squad out for its last match. The Championship will still remain the 2nd Division but with only 50-60% of its players full time. Who knows some of the clubs may decide to attempt to become financially viable and go fully part time?

I reckon some Nat 1 clubs will be better prepared for such a brutal change to finances than some of those in the Champ. Never mind the likes of YC, other clubs accustomed to the current financial model could be token over the edge.
Prem A offers no kind of spectacle to "neutral" supporters. Cuts on this scale will merely buttress PRL clubs and potentially reduce the market at L2/L3, which must have significant consequences for young player development nationally - the apparent raison d'etre for the RFU these days. Madness.

It makes you wonder how many Nat 1 teams would actually want to get into the Championship? Rich southern clubs with sugar daddies will not be bothered by the reduction in funding, so the Championship may become a new South East league! RFU making a total pigs ear of things as usual!!!!

Clubs living within their means won’t be bothered by the cuts in fact it could be better for recruitment as there could be more players available at a better base cost. In fact it makes transition to the Championship more viable

Why would any Nat one club want to go into the Championship? -especially with potentially no RFU funding after next season. Next year the Champ season will run from early Sept to the middle of May yet only have 22 league matches. The Champ Cup is hopeless from every angle. Whoever gets relegated from the Prem goes straight back up so the league winner is decided before the season starts -unless they go bust. Nat 1 is highly competitive, meaningful matches each week, season done by end of April and most clubs therein are proper rugby clubs to visit. No brainer really.

Well put. The RFU are ring fencing the Premiership by stealth. They are an utter disgrace.

That is exactly how the Guardian describes it:
Which begs the question of "What next?". If current funding allows the Champ to be "pro", then halving that will make it "semi-pro"... Should L2 revert to to a 16 team/30 game league, but with less jam in the sandwich for each club? Thereafter, two up/down with L3? Could make things more competitive down here - especially in the transition season.

I have to say I prefer this league to the one above more meaningful games and no silly cup matches.
For me if Albion didn't get promotion it would not be a problem.

Agreed to both above posts . ![]() And i thought the basis of the RFU funding the Championship to a degree was to afford the teams the luxury to go full time and to encourage them to get ground criteria up to Prem spec which bath's ground fail to achieve . ![]() |
