For the ordinary purposes of conversation, a superficial knowledge of many things goes further than an intimacy with one or two.

Nottingham 1 - 5 Pirates - Nottingham fading in the latter half of the season

Coventry 5 - 2 Scottish - Scottish to make a game of it.

Hartpury 5 - 1 Caldy - Caldy will not have a coach if I understand the RFU disciplinary report

Bedford 4 - 1 Doncaster - Donny was shocking against Amphill

Ealing 5 - 1 Ampthill - Ampthill the form team, but Ealing are very tough on their home ground.

I hadn't heard about the incident with Caldy's Matt Cairns, but easily found & verdict sounds pretty-clear: 12-week total ban (not just touchline) for abusing match officials, with 9 separate incidents mentioned in report & possibility of a third of the sanction being suspended if he does various 'ref-stuff' before September; so his season's finished (on match-days at least)...

Yes this went very much under the radar, I hadn't seen anything about it. The RFU report and Victim Statement from the ref don't make pretty reading. A 12 match ban of 'meaningful matches' will take him half way into next season if you exclude any pre season fixtures.

Very much let himself and his club down and not showing Caldy in a good light at all, especially the part about a threatening demeanour and implying bias in favour of the professional teams.

Although abuse of referees/ARs is apparently on the rise, these unpleasant incidents are thankfully still quite rare amongst the top tiers of rugby in England.

Where’s Big Eddie when you need him as he is very vocal in the virtues of Caldy Rugby club??

I’m sure he can explain all or has he gone missing in action when things have gone south.

Well done to the RFU in setting an example for completely unacceptable behaviour in abusing match officials by someone who should know better. No excuses.
Watch Out - The Scottish Phoenix Club is on the Up!!

There needs to be a better example set by those most prominent in the sport, starting with TV coverage and the endless attempts by pundits to highlight every perceived mistake made by officials... Last weekend was a prime example in the case of Karl Dickson which led to accusations of bias...

Have to say I'm not surprised. When Caldy were at The Mennaye this man spent most of the match marching up and down the touchline haranguing the officials (especially the fourth official). Some in the crowd took exception and advised him, in no uncertain terms, that he should shut up. He then turned his abuse on them.
In a comical exchange one young lady advised him to "keep his hair on" (he's follicly challenged). He then reported her to a steward for abusing him!

Ealing Trailfinders lineup to face Ampthill: Very solid squad. I wonder if the lack of Jonah Holmes in the line up indicates a potential move at the end of the season? Otherwise, pretty much the best team I could see them selecting with the players available.

1 Will Goodrick-Clarke

2 Matt Cornish

3 Biyi Alo

4 Bobby De Wee

5 Andrew Davidson

6 David O’Connor (C)

7 Jordy Reid

8 Richard Hardwick

9 Craig Hampson

10 Craig Willis

11 James Cordy-Redden

12 Pat Howard

13 Dan O’Brien

14 Angus Kernohan

15 Cian Kelleher

16 Mike Willemse

17 Kyle Whyte

18 Jimmy Roots

19 Barney Maddison

20 Rayn Smid

21 Lloyd Williams

22 Dan Lancaster

23 Tom Collins

I have met - and would anticipate most others in this parish who've completed a few laps of the rugby block have done so as well - plenty of people who are "lovely blokes" and yet change into completely different characters once they get their "game-face" on at 1pm on a Saturday, staying that way until early evening when a combination of winning, ranting and/or beer renders them human again...
