Lions show their class with a fine five point away win at Henley.
Lions travelled to Henley expecting a testing time against Henley Hawks who were above them in the league. Ironically it was a damp afternoon at Hawks’ ground, Dry Leas.
Lions were soon out of the blocks attacking the Hawks’ line. The Lions’ backs broke through the Hawks’ defence with their prop Isaac Thompson driving over for a try, with Ben Young adding the conversion.
A period of play followed with both sides conceding penalties – Cail Cookland scored two for Hawks and Young scored one for Lions, bringing the score to 6-10.
Following smart backs’ play Lions soon extended their lead with their second-row Ethen Godefroy going over for the try, with Young again adding the extras.
With Hawks exerting some forward pressure a chip through allowed their centre Rueben Norville to follow up and win the race to the line to score Hawks’ first try, with Cookland adding the conversion, closing the gap to 13-17.
Just before half time some loose play by Hawks allowed Lions centre, Zach Bean, to run through the Hawks’ defence to score their third try of the afternoon, with Young adding the extra points to make the half time score 13-24.

The Hawks went further behind when Lions’ winger, Jake Sterland, went electrically pass the Hawks’ defence to add another try for Lions, with Young’s conversion again increasing Lions lead, to make the score 13-31.
Henley’s George Amphlett was yellow carded after 58 mins, but the numerical advantage to Lions did not stop Hawks’ No 8, Alex Bradley, forcing his way over for a try and giving Hawks hope, by closing the gap to 18-31.
On 65 mins Lions’ Ethan Godefroy was yellow carded.
Again Sterland broke through the Hawks defence with a speedy run to score his second try of the afternoon to take the score to 18-36.
Some determined work by Hawks allowed them to close the gap and come back into the game with a try by their full-back Cookland taking the score to 23-36.
On 78 mins Lions’ George Taylor-Walker was yellow carded. Hawks took advantage from Lions being a player down and Bradley powered over for try, converted by Cookland, bringing the score to 30-36 in the closing minutes of the game. There was little time for any more play with Lions running out deserved winners.

A close well contested match, with Lions showing application and determination to win the game against demanding opposition. Hawks showed good character making a comeback in the closing quarter of the game.
An exciting try scoring afternoon – nine tries in total – four to Hawks, five to Lions. A dynamic team performance by Lions, showing their class against testing opposition. Some impressive place kicking by Ben Young for Lions, scoring 1 penalty and 4 conversions.
Following the game Lions were in sixth position in National League 2 South and Henley Hawks were in fifth position.
Head coach Gareth Collins commented: “We knew it would be a massive task against a really strong Henley side. Their set piece is excellent so to get parity there was our first objective which I thought we did. Our two young props, Will Spendlove and Isaac Thompson, did a great job in there against some experienced guys. The character shown by the whole team was incredible as well. I asked for high energy levels and got that in abundance. It wasn’t easy to play in those conditions either so to score five tries, and with some really high skill level involved, was really pleasing. We will enjoy the win as always but quickly move on to the next challenge”.
Lions Chairman, Ken Whitehead, said: “This was an impressive away victory against a team that gave us a testing time. The consistency of play in Lions run over the last two months has been a pleasure to see. We await the challenge of playing Hinckley next weekend”.
Next week, on Saturday 18th December 2021, Lions are at home to Hinckley in the Leicestershire local derby, at Westleigh Park, Lutterworth Road, Blaby, Leicester LE8 4DY, kick off 2.00 pm.
