Saturday 13th November 2021 League Points 5-0 Leicester Lions 32: Tries: Jake Sterland (2, 59), Ben Young (6), Alex WilHuckleberryson (36), Nick Cairns (55); Conversions: Ben Young (3, 7); Penalties: Jack Vernum (72); Electric start by Leicester Lions makes their day against Dings Crusaders. It was a pleasant sunny and dry afternoon for the contest between mid-table rivals Lions and Dings. Lions had a superb start to the game with two tries in quick succession. Lions put Dings under pressure from the start with a move that went right, left and back right again for winger Sterland to open the scoring with a try, converted by Young. Lions reapplied the pressure and this time their fly-half Young scythed through the centre to score the second try of the game, which he converted. Seven minutes gone and Lions were 14-0 in the lead. Dings started to come back into the game and with their winger Clark outpacing the Lions defence to go over for an unconverted try in the corner they closed the points gap. Lions reimposed their pressure with winger Constant dashing along the wing, smartly delivering a delightful slip pass to WilHuckleberryson, who glided over for a try, opening the score to 19-5. Some careless play led to Lions giving away a penalty, scored by Price for Dings, keeping them in the game at 19-8 at half time. Half Time: Leicester Lions 19 Dings Crusaders 8 Dings started the second half by putting Lions under pressure with some impressive forward driving tight mauls. On 48 mins Oliver Bilton drove over for a Dings’ try, converted by Price, taking the score to 19-15 and bringing Dings right back in the game. Lions then started to show their class when a quickly taken penalty by Lions allowed Cairns to magically weave his way through the Dings’ defence for a try that stretched Lions’ lead. This was quickly followed by Sterland's second try when he outran the Dings’ defence to score a try giving Lions a 29-15 lead. Lions completed the scoring with a penalty by Vernum to give Lions a well deserved victory. Full Time: Leicester Lions 32 Dings Crusaders 15 Five tries to Lions, two tries to Dings A keenly contested game, with both sides having opportunities. A patient and committed approach by Lions won the day. Leicester Lions’ head coach, Gareth Collins, said: “Our attack was threatening all afternoon and we couldn’t have asked for a better start. Fair play to Dings though, they worked their way back in to the contest and made it hard work for us. We knew they had a strong scrum and a really effective catch and drive so we wanted to try and keep them away from our 22 as much as possible. Unfortunately our error count and discipline let us down in the latter stages of the first half but we sorted a few issues at half time and I was happy with how we closed the game out second half.” Lions’ Chairman, Ken Whitehead, said: “The first ten minutes were a most impressive start by Lions, but Dings came back well each side of the interval. It was most pleasing to see the way the lads applied themselves to take the win in the latter part of the game.” Next week, on Saturday 20th November 2021, Lions will be travelling west, where they will be away at Barnstaple RFC, Pottington Road, Barnstaple, Devon, with a 2.00 pm kick off. Teams – Order 15-9, 1-8, 16-20 Dings Crusaders: Tom Hargen, Ian Clark, Matthew Smith, Luke Arscott, Tom Foot, Tom Price, Tom Knight, Andrew Turner, Tom Gollop, Nick English, Oliver Bilton, Dan Hodge, Alex Bilton, Josh Wood, Jake Holcombe Replacements: Joe Hawkesby, Zak Harvey, Josh Body, Steven Plummer, Harry Rowson |
