Went to a game in Midlands on Saturday, good contest played in bright sunshine during 1st half, then cloudier thereafter. Final whistle went just after 3.50, a minute or 2 before sunset; light was murky by that stage, tho' still playable, and would have been dangerous soon after 4pm.

Apparently home club wanted to move to 2pm but opponents and league rep made this difficult so they stuck with 2.15. Seems ridiculous. Lots of people think the earliest sunset coincides with the Solstice, but actually it's a couple of weeks earlier and makes 2.15 KOs rather risky this month, IMHO.

Realise this isn't a 'one-size-fits-all' issue for whole country given regional variations of daylight, but for many I would say 2pm was the better/safer option rather than risk an injury break necessitating that the game conclude in dangerously poor light - and perhaps further injury.

Great post mate and the last point trumps all for me. There will be push back by clubs concerned by the impact on hospitality sales but a lot of clubs do not frankly have the floodlights which can safely support a a match which runs late through injury.
Dont kick it. Pick it up and GO FORWARD.

Yes, you've beaten me to it, Islander.

I am coming at it from the photography angle. During Covid we had our floodlights upgraded at Sedgley Park, and now they're merely hopeless, when previously they were ridiculous. [Don't tell anyone at the club I've said this. The official line is that they are good.]

There may be clubs with better lights, at levels 3 and 4, but I know there are many with worse ones.

We kick off at 2.30 in all our home games, all months, but for the sake of half an hour we could have FREE lighting, even in midwinter. The players, supporters and even the referees would be able to see the ball, and to distinguish colours, to the benefit of all.

So, make it 2 pm for me, please, up north.

Thanks for the warning Dave. Personally think it should move to a blanket 2pm all season. I believe it would be a huge cost saving to all clubs as we have very good lights but they are running from 2:30pm as the refs insist they are on from the start and you probably wouldn’t realise for the first 90 minutes

Watched Sevenoaks v Worthing 18th November- no lights and a 2.30 ko.

It was very dark at the final whistle, any injury that required a reasonable length stoppage would likely to have caused the game to be abandoned.

Absolutely no idea why games aren't 2pm ko following clock changes, unless the ground has approved lights.

I used to hate it as a player.
My eyesight isn't great but normally I can play fine.

I was fly half

And in the dark December matches I was guessing where the touchline was.

Another benefit of the 2pm ko's is the fact that on a winter's day you get out of the cold and into the warm a little earlier and if you are lucky you might even get a bit of winter sun in the first part of the game.

A negative for clubs I suppose is that it might cut short some of the hospitality lunches.

We've always had 2pm kick-offs after the clocks go back.  About 15 years ago we had a game against Nottingham that finished in the dark - you couldn't see one touchline from the other - so after that the rest of the games until February were moved to 1:45 kick-offs.  And the following year, the Nottingham fans all came down wearing head torches!

I remember something similar, but at Nottm's Ireland Avenue.
I think they used to tether several glow-worms to each pylon (maybe fewer than that).
