Lions meet their match against Clifton, but put up a gritty performance.

Lions travelled to Bristol expecting a challenging time against Clifton who were in top position in the league. Because of the Christmas/New Year break and match cancellations it was four weeks since Lions had played a game. This was the first Lions reverse fixture of the 2021-22 season having played Clifton at Westleigh Park at the start of the season in September.

There were wet and muddy conditions for Lions visit to Clifton. Clifton raced out of the blocks with their back-row, Harry Bates, going over for a try, converted by Luke Cozens after 4 mins. Lions came back into the game quickly with centre, Dan Martin, driving through the Clifton defence to score a try, converted by Ben Young, to level the score at 7-7.

Clifton applied some pressure and their No 8, Brad Talbot, went over for a typical back row try, with Cozens adding the extras, to put Clifton back in the lead.
Clifton’s forward pressure was repeated when Talbot again went over for his second try of the afternoon, with Cozens adding the conversion, taking Clifton into a 21-7 lead.

Lions returned putting Clifton under pressure with their winger, Zach Bean, going through Clifton’s defence to score an unconverted try to reduce the points gap. Towards the end of the first half Young added a penalty for Lions to close the score to 21-15.

A keenly contested first half, with Lions still within touching distance of Clifton.

Half Time: Clifton 21 Leicester Lions 15

At the start of the second half Clifton had a purple scoring patch. In a short period Charlie Powell and Alex Giltrow scored tries for Clifton, with Luke Cozens adding a conversion.

Ten minutes later Harry Bate added his second try of the afternoon, again converted by Luke Cozens, opening the score up to 40-15, with the last quarter of the game to go. It looked like the game could have run away from Lions.

Some resolute and determined play brought Lions came back into the game when their winger, Devon Constant, went over for a try, converted by Ben Young, to make the score 40-22.

Effective defence by Clifton prevented Lions from adding to their score.

Final Score: Clifton 40 Leicester Lions 22

A well contested match, with Lions showing application and determination against demanding opposition. Clifton showed their class producing a deserved win, retaining their position at the top of the table.

An exciting try scoring afternoon – nine tries in total – six to Clifton, three to Lions. A pleasing team performance by Lions, showing their class against testing opposition.

Following the game Lions were in seventh position in National League 2 South and Clifton were still leading the pack.

Head coach Gareth Collins commented: “Having not played a game for four weeks it was obviously going to be a testing time against league leaders Clifton. I think it was a fairly even first half and we recovered well after Clifton’s scoring patch after the break to still be competing at the end of the game. Clifton played well and it was a deserved win for them, but I think we gave of our best making them work for their victory”.

Lions’ Chairman, Ken Whitehead, said: “Obviously any defeat is a disappointing result, but we were proud of the way the lads stuck to the task at hand, producing a most creditable performance during the game”.

Next week, on Saturday 15th January 2022, Lions are at home to Westcliff, from near Southend-on-Sea, at Westleigh Park, Lutterworth Road, Blaby, Leicester LE8 4DY, kick off 2.00 pm.
