I've just seen a notification from Richmond that their home Championship match Vs Coventry, postponed due to Covid has been rescheduled for 26th March.
I note that this date (26th March) is the week following the scheduled end of the season. Is this the first official sign that the RFU has cancelled plans for a cup competition this season, thereby removing a minimum of two home matches income from each club in the Championship, and removing two guaranteed home matches from each season ticket sold?9 Edited by OldNick - 12 Jan 2022 at 15:50 |

26/3 from what i understand is actually 1 of the 3 covid/rest weekends that were put in place internally via the Clubs. So season format decisions as of yet have been made.

It appears 3 clubs have had 3 matches postponed so i assume they will be played on the 3 reserve weekends. I imagine the problem will arise, and a revamping of the cup, if any more matches are cancelled involving any of these 3 teams.

DO22 and marigold* are correct; as things stand (not much is guaranteed in this Covid era) the league should be finished by end of March & some form of cup competition is then due to be staged during April & May. But I must stress the three words highlighted...
* marigold: in fact only 2 clubs (Pirates & Richmond) have had 3 games postponed. Ealing have also only played 10 games, but have already had their second bye, so only 2 games to catch up.

10 weeks to April 1st.
Will the RFU reveal Cup plans before the Six Nation's. After Six Nations? In the middle and hope no one notices it?

The older I get, the more the RFU leave me confused.

I think the cup will be on from what i can see now. I've understood its a 2 leg knock out between 2 and 11 with 1st getting a bye round. W/C 2nd April and 9th April.

That structure does not conform the the 2x guaranteed home matches sold to the clubs pre-season.

A knockout between clubs ranked 2 and 11. This I have to see Round 1 10 clubs Round 2 5 clubs…only RFU could have such a crackpot idea 🤔

Wouldn't the following be a better suggestion?
1st Rd - Top 5 get byes, 6-11 play off (2 legs?) 2nd Rd - top 5 plus the 3 1st Rd winners. The premier rule of any cup is to reach 4,8,16,32 teams etc as soon as possible |

I believe round 2 is the 5 winners + whoever gets the bye in round 1. So that would make it 6 sides... I'm pretty sure i remember the notion of a pool stage then? But nothing has been officially announced so we shall see, hopefully no more postponements to the league schedule aswell.

Let's try to come up with the most ridiculous ideas. Five first round matches, with the top finisher in the league getting a by. The five winners plus the bye go into two pools of three, playing the other members of their pool home and way over six weeks. Meanwhile, the remaining five play the other four, once each, in a plate competition. This ensures every team gets at least two home games. Then a final or it there is time in the schedule semi-final and final.

Another week of silence.
Wasn’t January going to see official announcement of next seasons structure? Or of the cup? Okay it’s 9 weeks before a cup would commence. 8 until the final balls of the league are kicked. |
