Rochford Hundred 19 Leicester Lions 20 Saturday 30th October 2021 League Points 1-4 Rochford Hundred 19: Tries: Sonny Greengage (13), George Griffiths (29), Sam Fombo (52); Conversions: Sam Cappaert (14, 52); Leicester Lions 20: Tries: Zac Bean (23), Devon Constant (64), Isaac Thompson (70); Last quarter surge by Lions gives them a one point victory against Rochford Hundred in a nerve tingling game. This was Lions second away trip of the season to the Southend-on-Sea area having already had a victory against Westcliff. The game started with both sides having opportunities, but Lions were first to open the scoring after 8 mins with a penalty by Ben Young. Rochford were showing plenty of commitment and quickly retaliated when their centre Sonny Greengage went over for a try, converted by Sam Cappaert, giving them a 7-3 lead. After 23 mins a speedy break by Lions’ Zac Bean gave him a try, converted by Jake Sterland, which took Lions back into the lead at 7-10. On 29 mins Rochford came back at Lions with an unconverted try by George Griffiths giving Rochford back the lead at 12-10. On 30 mins Lions’ Ben Young was yellow carded, quickly followed by a yellow card for Rochford’s Redmond Newberry on 32 mins. Half-Time: Rochford Hundred 12 Leicester Lions 10 Continued pressure by Rochford gave their second row Sam Fombo the opportunity the score under the posts, with Cappaert adding the straight forward conversion, to open up a 19-10 lead. Lions started to show their true class in the last quarter of the game. Lions’ pressure started to tell on Rochford with Lions’ winger Devon Constant romping home to score a try on 64 mins, to bring Lions within a single score of Rochford with a 19-15 score. On 67 mins Rochford’s Cappaert was yellow carded. Rochford found it difficult to withstand the Lions pressure and on 70 mins Lions’ prop Isaac Thompson drove over for the winning try of the game, putting Lions in the lead 19-20. Final Score: Rochford Hundred 19 Leicester Lions 20 A close result, with the lead changing throughout the game. Lions showed their quality with a sustained performance as the game proceeded, with a powerful display in the last quarter. Obviously a disappointing finish to the game for Rochford. A good win for Lions with the late score, especially as they had been squeezed out of a win two weeks ago with a late score by the opposition away against Canterbury. A balanced try scoring afternoon – six tries in total – three to Rochford Hundred, three to Lions. Following the game Lions were in eighth position in National League 2 South and Rochford were in thirteenth position. Head coach Gareth Collins commented: ‘‘It wasn’t our best performance however any win away from home in this league is a good result. Rochford made life really difficult for us and we had to show some character to come out on top. We tried to do a lot of the right things but our execution of basic skills let us down. Sometimes that happens though. We’ll address it and we’ll move on to the next challenge.’’ Next week, on Saturday 6th November 2021, it is a catch-up week, where Lions do not have a league fixture. Their next league fixture will be on Saturday 13th November at home to Dings Crusaders, at Westleigh Park, Blaby, with a 2.00 pm kick off. Teams – Order 15-9, 1-8, 16-20 |
