Leicester Lions have appointed Ethan Godefroy as captain for this coming season, having now passed a 100 games for the club, the blindside flanker is a great choice for skipper.
Dual registered players returning for this coming season include Harry Clarke, Malelili Satala, Charlie Myall and Charlie Davies, all senior academy players with Leicester Tigers.

The season gets closer with the Lions travelling to Moseley this weekend for the first pre-season "friendly", be interesting to hear how the new players slot in to the side.

I understand that the Lions have pulled out of this pre season fixture due to "squad availability". Not great from Moseley's perspective.

Rosslyn Park 48 Leicester Lions 12The Lions took a very young and inexperienced squad to last years third place finishers in National One for what was a very tough encounter. In fact 11 of the match day squad of 21 were making their debut for the Lions, 9 of whom are still teenagers.Given this scenario it was no surprise that the Rosslyn Park side, stacked with Premiership and Championship experience, took control early on. The Lions showed their naivety, playing in the wrong areas of the pitch, and their errors were continuously punished by the opposition. The Lions went in at half time 36-0 down having barely had an attacking set of their own.Credit must go to the young Lions though who grew in to the game second half and gave as good as they got. Suddenly they were moving the ball around the way the Lions supporters have come accustomed to of recent years and the side showed what they can do. In fact honours were even for the second half, two tries apiece. As is the nature of the relationship with our Premiership neighbours, Leicester Tigers, the young players from last season will now be moved on to further their careers but the door now opens up for a new crop of future stars. 18 year old fly-half Tom Threlfall understandably took some time to settle but once he did he showed some very classy touches, including a pinpoint cross field kick for James Stubbs to score. Henry Mountford proved himself very capable in the front row and George Pearson looks like a really exciting back three prospect. A number of other new players stood out on the day. Hooker Arthur Allen, signed from Boroughmuir Bears in Scotland, was very busy round the park and was rewarded with a try from a driving maul (a rare sight for the Lions supporters last season). Also Joey Britton impressed, playing 80 minutes in the back row and making a number of strong carries and tackles. Clearly the work being put in by the new forwards coaches George Richardson and Sam Lockwood is paying dividends.A number of other young players, second rows Ben Almond and Mack Welsh, prop Liam Burrows and 18 year old scrum half Ollie Bunce, showed real promise and will have benefitted no end from the exposure of this level.Head coach Gareth Collins reflected afterwards: ''We don't place any importance on the result of a pre-season game. We knew we had a huge turnover of players this summer and would be coming in to the season with a really young group so we decided to play Rosslyn Park as we knew that they would enable our players to see what level we need to get to. They are a great side who play fast and wide and they were excellent at times today. Our boys will have learnt a lot and we're happy with some of the outcomes of the processes we've been trying to put in place this summer. We've got a lot of work to do but seeing as some of those lads have only done one or two sessions with us so far we're in a good place to build from.' ' The Lions' next a final pre-season game is at home to Luctonians on 31st August. 2pm kick off. Free entry. Edited by tigerburnie - 20 Aug 2024 at 18:42 |

Bishop's Stortford 36 Leicester Lions 12
Although clearly not the result that the Lions wanted, a very young and inexperienced side will have learnt a lot from their first taste of National 1 rugby. Due to former player Ed Sumpter's wedding alongside injuries to a number of senior players, head coach Gareth Collins took a squad that included just 6 players with any national league experience. The home sided started at a blistering pace, understandably buoyed by the minutes applause to mark the tragic passing of a former player. The Lions defended resolutely but eventually were broken when Stortford's hooker, Alex Rayment picked-and-went from a ruck to cross under the posts. Converted by Mike Cooke. It was only 4 minutes later when the hooker touched down again, this time at the back of a driving maul from a 5 meter lineout after Mack Welsh was penalised for not rolling away at a breakdown. Cooke again added the difficult conversion for an early 14-0 lead. The home side continued to dominate both territory and possession as the Lions struggled to secure any first phase ball. Although they defended sternly, they finally conceded a third try in the 27th minute when flanker Harrison Langworthy crashed over from the base of a try-line ruck. Cooke again converting (21-0 ). The Lions got in to the Stortford 22 twice in the latter stages of the opening period. Firstly some good hands released 18 year old winger George Pearson chipped ahead but his kick drifted in field and was dotted down by a covering defender before he could get there. Then in the final minutes of the half the Lions drove from a 5 metre lineout but their driving lineout was agonisingly held up over the line. HT 21-0 Once again it was the home side that started the second half on the front foot and were rewarded within a minute with a try to Cooke, who went over in the corner, after a clean break up the middle by Stortford's impressive number 8 Will Rogers. Cooke was unable to convert from out wide this time (26-0). The Lions were securing more set-piece ball in the second half and were looking dangerous out wide, but it was the home side who scored again, Rayment securing his hat-trick try from another driving maul. Cooke converted. (33-0). Despite the score line the young Lions never gave up and in fact continued to grow in to the game. For the last quarter they enjoyed most of the ball and continued to look threatening. When Stortford's Harrison Langworthy was shown a red card for a high tackle after 65 minutes, the Lions finally started to find space in the home side's defence. Continuing their scoring form from last week wingers Jake Sterland, on his 50th appearance, and Jack Edwards both profited from clever attacking kicks from Luke Bouchier and Joe Brock respectively. Bouchier converted one of the two scores that were separated by a successful Cooke penalty kick. FT 36-12 Head coach Gareth Collins commented: ''A really tough day but our boys will learn a lot from it. We've been able to blood a lot of our wider squad today which will have given them valuable experience. I actually think some of the young lads really stepped up and did themselves proud today. Stortford had a lot of the ball and so we showed really good character to make it as hard as we did for them to break us down. We found our way in to the game, which was not easy, and started to show how dangerous we can be if we have ball. Not the result we were after obviously but a lot of positives given the circumstances.'' |

Leicester Lions 7 Moseley 21
A much changed Lions side saw the return of captain Ethan Godefroy and vice captains Johnny Murdoch, Oliver Taylor and James Stubbs, along with Isaac Thompson, Simon Johnson and summer signing Jordan Tebbatt all making their first appearance of the season. A warm day at Westleigh Park offered the perfect conditions for running rugby but it was clear from the outset that the strong Moseley pack would be taking the much lighter Lions pack on up front. The visitors set the tone early on by kicking to the corner and, although the lineout wasn’t won cleanly, they managed to regather and hooker Sam McNulty went over following a number of drives. Jack Jolly added the extras (0-7). Moseley then doubled their lead on 14 minutes when a well worked set play from a midfield lineout set winger Egodo free to race through to score. Jolly again added the extras (0-14). The Lions really came back in to the contest though and looked really threatening with ball in hand. They were rewarded on 19 minutes when centre Charlie Davies bust through the middle and found Arthur Allen with an offload who in turn handed on to full back Joe Brock to go over. Luke Bouchier adding the extras (7-14). The powerful Moseley scrum and maul was causing the Lions pack some difficulty and when a series of infringements from the home side saw them go down to 13 men, Moseley capitalised through another driving lineout, scored by flanker Will Safe. Jolly kicked his third conversion for a 7-21 half time lead. The second half was an even contest and both sides had chances but the lack of execution in crucial areas meant that the score line remained 7-21. The Lions had some big chances from attacking lineouts that they failed to secure and Moseley also had another driving maul held up over the line. A well deserved win for the clinical Moseley side but the Lions side deserved something out of the game so will be ruing their missed opportunities. Head coach Gareth Collins commented: ''It was a frustrating game really. Moseley are a top side and we knew they would be really difficult to deal with up front. Our plan was to try and open up the game, and when we did that we looked really good and caused them some real problems. We created enough good chances to win the game in all honesty but unfortunately our lack of accuracy at crucial moments let us down. I'm happy with how we competed against an experienced side though. It's another learning experience for our young players, and I've no doubt we'll get to where we want to be.'' |

Lions v Moseley game, here.
Mose forwards dominated the first half, but the Lions replacements seemed to get some control back, in a much more evenly contested second half.

The Lions had Albion in all sorts of trouble in this match, had the ref been more even with the yellow card with Albion giving away eight penalties in the second half, this result could have gone the other way, a lot of talent in this young Lions side.

Match report
Leicester Lions 29 Sedgley Park 23
The Lions secured their first win of the season in a tough contest against a physical Sedgley Park side who nearly stole victory at the end of the game. The home side started brightly and were rewarded on 12 minutes when wing Jake Sterland crossed following a period of exerted pressure from the Lions pack. Luke Bouchier converted from out wide (7-0). The Tigers got on the scoreboard almost straight after through an Oliver Glasse penalty but Sterland got his second on 17 minutes to extend the Lions’ lead (12-3). The home side had a number of good scoring chances but their lack of execution and ill-discipline in defence kept the visitors in the game. Glasse converted another penalty for Sedge before hooker Ben Gregory scored two converted driving mauls tries in an action packed last 5 minutes of the half to give them a 20-12 half time lead, somewhat against the run of play. Glasse added another penalty shortly after the break but the Lions regained control of the contest and started to dominate both possession and territory. They regained the lead through two close range scores, firstly through Ethan Godefroy on 51 minutes and then replacement hooker Arthur Allen on 64 minutes, both following continuous pressure on the Sedgley line. Bouchier converted one (24-23). Replacement winger Jack Edwards then crossed with 5 minutes to go to seemingly put the contest to bed, but the missed conversion kept the visitors within one score. The Lions defended resolutely for a long passage of play but a breakdown infringement gave the visitors one last opportunity. With the last play of the game, having kicked to the corner, the big Sedge pack eyed up a third and match-winning maul try, but the Lions pack held them up to secure a much needed victory. Head coach Gareth Collins: ‘‘It was a difficult game to watch from the side line. Two sides who really needed a win so there was a lot of desperation out there. We started really well and should have been out of sight in the first half in all honesty. Fair play to Sedge though, they stuck in there and took their opportunities well. Half time game at a good time for us as we’d really lost control of the contest. We got back to the plan second half though and fully deserved the win. We’re still working towards that consistent performance but to get 5 points when not at our best can only be a positive.’’ |

Match report from visit to Rams
Rams 54 Lions 29
It was the home sides' centenary match so a huge crowd was treated to a high scoring game between two attack-minded sides. Being away to the league leaders was always going to be difficult for the Lions but despite being dominated in the set-piece the young Lions side once again showed great character to score four second half tries and leave Berkshire with a well deserved bonus point. The Lions started brightly and were first to get a scoring opportunity when Luke Bouchier turned down a kickable penalty to kick to the corner. The Lions' confidence was misplaced though as they lost the lineout. Unlike the Lions, the Rams did convert their first opportunity when Tom Vooght crossed from a powerful maul on 12 minutes (5-0). Luke Bouchier cut the deficit with a penalty on 17 minutes but the rest of the first half belonged to the hosts who's set-piece was causing havoc. The Rams scored two more first half maul tries, firstly through Max Hayman on 24 minutes and then Ryan Lomas on 33 minutes. Fraser Honey converting both scores (19-3). The Lions did have a rare visit to the Rams 22 towards the end of the first half when their scrum half Ollie Cole was yellow carded for a deliberate knock-on, but again the Lions' inability to execute their set-piece let them down. HT Rams 19 Lions 3 With the home team down to 14 men the Lions would have being eyeing a way back in to the contest but it was the Rams who struck first, just one minute in to the second half, when second row Nile Dacres crossed from close range following a period of pressure having retrieved their own kick off. Again Honey converted (26-3). The Lions did then capitalise on the extra man with two tries in quick succession, both from midfield line breaks from the impressive Luke Bouchier. First to profit from a good support line was Aaron Pope on 43 minutes and this was followed only 4 minutes later when George Pearson finished out wide. Bouchier converted one to reduce to deficit (26-15). Momentum was now with the Lions, who's quick attack was causing the Rams defence problems, but a big moment swung the game back in to the home sides favour. Another Lions line break was halted by a knock on by a Rams defender which wasn't spotted by the officials. A couple of carries later, the ball was spilled and Rams full back Zach Clow scooped up the loose ball 5 metres from his own line to break clear and then feed winger Tomek Pozniak to score. Honey added the extras (33-15). Almost straight after the restart the contest was all but ended when another promising Lions attack was bought to an end when Rams centre Alek Kalling-Smith intercepted deep in his own half and ran the length. Honey converted again (40-15). To the Lions' credit they did not give up though and with 20 minutes left they set about getting two more scores. Aaron Pope scored his second on 67 minutes following a break from replacement fly-half Tom Threlfall who then converted the score (40-22). The impressive Rams full-back Zach Clow rounded off a fine afternoon with two superb individual scores in the last 10 minutes which were both converted by Honey, but the Lions were rewarded for their hard work two minutes from time when another replacement, Isaac Thompson, crashed over following good work by the industrious Reuben Logan who carried well all afternoon. FT Rams 54 Lions 29 Head coach Gareth Collins commented: ''Rams are a great side, and top of the league for a reason, so we can't be too disappointed with a point. It's more than we got here last season so once again it's evidence of our progress. We cannot afford to make so many errors though, especially against such a good side. Ultimately we gave ourselves too much to do to try and come back. There is lots for our young boys to learn from again today but I'm really proud of the character and the attacking intent that we showed to score four tries in the second half.'' |

Roth team news courtesy of Titans.com :
This Saturday round six of National League 1 sees Rotherham Titans take to the road for a tricky looking fixture against Leicester Lions; kick-off at Westleigh Park is 2pm. Titans impressed last week at Clifton Lane with a 45-19 bonus-point win over a good Dings Crusaders side, where a headline grabbing hat trick of tries from John Okafor proved pivotal in Rotherham’s success. However, this week’s clash away to Leicester Lions, a team Roth have never previously played, is another where they will need to be at their best if they are to get anything from the game. Lions’ current league position is very deceptive, as some of their performances this season have clearly shown they can mix it with the best in the division. They were narrowly beaten at Plymouth Albion, a ground considered to be one of the toughest in the league, whilst their last outing at home saw them beat Sedgley Park with a bonus point and last week’s loss against title favourites Rams saw them score 4 tries to grab another bonus point – as such, no one at Clifton Lane will underestimate the task in hand. Going into the match Titans have made three changes to their starting XV. The front row sees hooker Jack Bergmanas come in for Luke Cole and he’ll be flanked by props Zach Toerien who in turn comes in for Charlie Capps at loosehead and Alastair Donkor at tighthead. The second row stays the same with skipper Zak Poole lining up alongside Curran Maguire. The back row is also unchanged with John Okafor and Harry Newborn on the flanks and Callum Bustin at number 8. Across the backline scrum half JB Bruzulier is joined again in the half backs by Corben Ollivent. Lloyd Hayes and Jamie Cooke retain their partnership in midfield, whilst across the back three Tomasi Tanumi comes in on the wing for Travis Gideon with Jack Hedley on the other wing and Ronnie Du Randt at full back. Commenting ahead of the game Harvey Biljon said: “We are looking forward to taking on Leicester Lions; there is a real buzz about training and the players are enjoying what we are doing, but we are all staying focussed on one match at a time. “We know Leicester have the beating of any team on their day; they showed that with their win over Sedgley Park. “They’ve been in every game, they’re at home and they’ll want to make sure they continue their fine recent form and so we will go there and give them our full respect. “Our aim is to try and keep on improving as a group and if we can, our performances will improve too.” Titans: 15 Ronnie Du Randt, 14 Jack Hedley, 13 Lloyd Hayes, 12 Jamie Cooke, 11 Tomasi Tanumi, 10 Corben Ollivent, 9 JB Bruzulier, 1 Zach Toerien, 2 Jack Bergmanas, 3 Alastair Donkor, 4 Zak Poole (Capt.), 5 Curran Maguire, 6 John Okafor, 7 Harry Newborn, 8 Callum Bustin. Replacements: 16 Luke Cole, 17 Charlie Capps, 18 Andrew Foster, 19 Ellis Thomas, 20 Rob Povey. |
