Cinderford 3 - 8 Cambridge
Cambridge were down to 13 after two yellow cards to front row - causing uncontested scrums for the last few minutes.

Bizarre conclusion at Cinderford.  17 minutes added time played an the end, with the referee deciding the outcome with decision not to award Cinderford a penalty try - even though Cambridge conceded five penalties in one 10 minute long scrum, and had two of the front row yellow carded.

It was the clear the referee was reluctant to give Cinders the win by awarding the fully expected penalty try, but by binning two Cambridge front rows he forced uncontested scrums and took Cinders advantage away.

Ignoring the frustration at the officiating again, Cambridge defended incredibly throughout. Cinders were well off the pace and nothing they tried could get through the Cambridge dogged defence.  In the 97th minute the home faithfull held their breath as Cinders used their two man advantage to go wide, but just as they were going over the line to at least tie the game, the Cinderford man dropped the pass, and ended the game.

F you went to uncontested scrums surely there was a big hole out wide somewhere as Cambs would have to continue to scrummage with 8. If it was a different player causing the offence it is a different penalty and it has to be without doubt that a try would be scored. We had a similar situation a couple of seasons ago at lufbra and a West Country ref (former front row) didn’t go under the sticks using above definition

Cambridge defended as though they had 2 more men on the park, not 2 less, and the result was probably a fair representation of the match - they were probably the most disciplined and solid defence faced at Dockham Rd this year.

The frustration is that the 2 yellows actually benefited Cambridge under the circumstances - which you are right to say shouldn't have been the case.  With 2 men up Cinders tried to score near to the posts, as the conversion would have given the win.  If they had gone for the overlap they would surely have scored out wide and taken the draw - but to sum up a frustrating afternoon they dropped the ball when finally taking this route.

We had a similar thing last week - with three yellow cards. Stortford scored but could not get the second score.
However, we have had our share of foul play yellows not leading to penalty tries in the weeks before.
These things do tend to even out.
