Redruth's powerful open forward play wins the day against Leicester Lions.
Leicester Lions welcomed Redruth for their first visit to Westleigh Park, Blaby.
Reds had the advantage of the slope and breeze during the first half.
Redruth opened putting Lions under pressure, but Lions broke out of defence to take the play to Redruth's try line. As Lions spun out the ball, Reds took an interception pass for their winger Ashley Taylor to almost run the length of the pitch, being stopped close to the Lions' line, which led to a yellow card for Lions' Will Helliwell. The ensuing scrum led to Red's Jamie Prisk driving his way over the try line for the opening score of the game.
Reds continued their forward pressure which led to tries by Jack Oulton and Jack Simmons, both converted by Fraser Honey, to give Reds a 0-19 lead moving towards half-time.
In the closing minutes of the first Half, Reds took a line-out in their own 22 metre area, on their own throw, but Lions charged down the attempted clearance kick, working the ball out to the left for their winger Devon Constant to speed over for a try, closing the half-time with the score 5-19.
Half-Time: Leicester Lions 5 Redruth 19
Lions had the advantage of the slope and the breeze in the second half. In the first minute of the second half Lions worked their way down the pitch, finishing with a sleight of hand pass to Harry Glynn who shimmed his way over for a try, adding the conversion himself.
Following Lions pressure Reds gave away a penalty, which Harry Glynn scored to take the score to 15-19.
It began to look as if Lions were coming back into the game, but Reds again upped the pressure with their powerful forwards open play. Reds soon asserted their pressure on Lions with Ben Fox going over for their fourth try, with Fraser Honey adding the conversion, opening the score to 15-26.
Reds continued their dominating forward play and in the last move of the game Dean Bounds went over for a try taking the final score to 15-31.
Final Score: Leicester Lions 15 Redruth 31
A well contested game, with a deserved victory to Redruth.
Following the game Redruth were in third position in National League 2 South and Lions in seventh position.
Lions head coach, Gareth Collins, said, “Redruth made a good start with some effective open forwards play. We competed against them well in the lineout and tight scrummaging play and made a good comeback around the middle 25 minutes of the game. But as the second half progressed they played well in re-establishing their opening power play, running out deserved winners.”
Next week, on Saturday 21st March 2020, Lions are due to play Bournemouth at Westleigh Park, Blaby, with a 2.00 pm kick off.
