By that takes you back. I can remember going to see Yorkshire Copperworks play Halifax Vandals one winter, probably a year or two before that, when there were no other games on. The pollution in Stourton probably warmed the pitch up enough. Talk about clogging - it was a wonder the game was completed.

The league one above North 1 was called Area League North (level 5 and the first split from National rugby)
Northern clubs were: Birkenhead Park, Roundhay, Northern, Preston Grasshoppers, Durham City and Broughton Park Midlands clubs were: Rugby Lions, Stourbridge, Lichfield, Derby, Solihull (before merged with Birmingham) Prior to that I would have classed all those Northern clubs as lower "1st Class" (whatever that means - results in bold print in the Telegraph I guess) as well as several in the leagues originally listed above, but of the Midlands clubs only Rugby Lions would be similarly described. |

Much credit should always go to Hoppers and Stour for staying at this level (except brief flirtations into the league above) although as I type I realise that Hoppers have dropped this season (although they’ll go straight back up). Two massive clubs who’ve been consistent for 30 years

The old 'North One' is the equivalent of National 2 North today (Level 4.).
I think that Hull & East Riding/Hull Ionians or Tynedale may hold the record for the number of years spent at Level 4. or above, without ever dropping to Level 5. No doubt someone might prove me wrong?

Yes, possibly right - considering the small number of Midlands teams in it (most of which struggle to stay in it). And probably consistent with my comment about the relative 'status' of the Midlands clubs at the outset. When the clubs at level 5 are put back into their 'home' region before level transfers occur, there are always fewest clubs in the Midlands region. |

Reference Hull Ionians, I believe this information is correct, but willing to be corrected.
Hull Ionians were at level 5 from 1989-2002 (From 1987 if you count Hull and ER)
They were at level 4 for a season (2002-3) before being relegated to level 5 in 2003 for 2 seasons (2003-5) Since 2005 they have have been moving between levels 4 and 3. |

Happy to stand corrected. All a question of Leagues and equivalent levels. My mistake. The leagues were introduced 32 years ago. I don't think Hull &ER/Hull Ionians have a bad record during that time, be it at levels 5, 4 or 3. You may disagree but then again, you live up a tree. |
