PiffPaff - you are aware that the RFU can change the rules at any time.
Just as they reduced the numbers for 16 to 12 with no notice mid season.

They could decide to increase the Championship to 16 and reduce Natiional 1 and 2 to 14 teams, reprieving Otley and so on lower down.

Not sure that would make sense - N1 and N2 clubs being told reduce to 14 whilst championship is increased to 16?

Surely it would be better to have 14 in all leagues and then stop messing about for messing about's sake - but that said we are talking about the RFU.

I picked those numbers to minimize the disruption to the lower leagues inthe one season before the wholesale shake-up.
National 1 and 2 are planning to reduce to 14 though that has been delayed a season.
This is mainly for player welfare.
However, championship clubs have a larger budget, and still get some suppport fromthe RFU. So they can afford a larger squad.
But at the end of the day, that needs to be discussed with the DORs and treasureers of theclubs affected.
Also given that increasing the size ofthe Premiership and championship mean more sides woudl need to play National 1 when they were expecting to be in regional leagues - there does need to be buy infrom those clubs.
It may be there isnot sufficient support ofr the third national league.

Don't forget that National 2 will have 3 Leagues of 14 rather than the current 2 of 16. So the current 48 Clubs become 56. If the Premiership goes to 14 and the Championship follows, then the current 72 at Levels 1 - 4 becomes 84 with 12 Clubs coming up from Level 5, 3 per region effectively.

Oh this speculation is so much fun! Those of us at Level 3/4 Clubs would really wish the owners of Level 1/2 Clubs would stop dithering!!

It’s very apparent that what appears a simple idea in the Premiership to have 13 teams, has not really considered or cared about knock on affects.

If I recall funding from RFU has dropped to £125,000 per season.

Losing one club will reduce match days by 2.

However no doubt the RFU will retain the £125,000 rather than increase the 11 remaining clubs share.
Looking forward to new beginnings.

Sorry if Im stating the obvious here but.

Would it not make sense to have Champ 11 for 21/22 season as a one off.

Have a 2 legged play off, top of Champ v bottom of Prem at end of the 21/22 season.
Therefore Prem not ring fenced and you can/could have movement.

No relegation from Champ end of 21/22 season, thus giving the sides in it now and next season a chance to bed in, without the worry of financial hardship, having lost 80% of their grant from RFU and having the extra cost of funding their own tests to play this year!

Pull top 3 from National 1 up at end of 21/22 season, therefore making  Champ a 14 team league for 22/23 season.

National 1 has lost 3 going up giving it 13 teams, send the bottom 2 down giving it 11 and you bring up winners of 2 North and South and play of winners to give you 14 there as well.

You then have 3 National 2 south leagues of 14 sides.

All Champ, National 1 and National 2 sides have the same season and playing dates..Same rest weekends and same structured season.

Or I'm I being far too silly and have not been paid £500k by the RFU to carry out a survey!

Scrumtime, I think that is exactly what the RFU want but they have to persuade PRL and the Championship. The NCA is happy but waiting on what happens above!

All looks a bit too sensible and logical to me. Vested interests won't like it.

The problem is getting the Premiership to accept promotion.
If there is at least the hope of promotion to play for, then a season with 11 teams makes some sense.

But if that is closed and it is agreed that there will be no relegation as league size will increase,  if only to 12, at the end of the season, will the crowds be interested in a season of essentially freindlies with ealing annointed Champion possibly before Christmas.

I think £112m of BT money might have a rather large say in that.

Or we will be back to a  one hour slot at 4.00 Sunday afternoon of Rugby Special

Quite agree, BT are not in favour of ring-fencing the Premiership as it increases the number of games which are effectively ' dead rubbers' towards the end of the season.
