72 mins. 48-33
Cov really struggling at this stage, unsurprisingly. Down to 14 and against a stiff wind - and Sarries.
Always a bridge too far.

FT 48-33 to the home side.
Good game. Cov still rusty, but better than I expected.
Sarries slick as.

My thoughts on Bedford game:

We were in complete control of the game for first 50, then tapered off with our 2nd XV (or in fact 2nd XIV) in the last 30 after Ampthill gained set piece superiority when the 18 year prop came on.
Our backs looked v slick and will cause every team in this league problems. We are definitely going to chuck it around this season!
Most of the saints lads looked good. Tommy Matthews looks a real class player at 10 and Tui Uru (no 8) was probably the stand out player in the first half.
Oli Curry completely needlessly got sent off and will likely miss the opening couple of games through suspension; not really something we can afford. If I was Mike Rayer I’d be absolutely fuming as the amount of effort and money to get this season on, and he throws a wild punch in a sodding pre season game meaning he’ll probably miss 20% of the season!
We definitely lack depth in a few positions so it’s crucial we keep our first choice props (McCarthy/Paul), Onojaife, Rich Lane and possibly even the saints number 8 available all season.

Overall, pretty happy with what I saw and optimistic if we’re able to field something close to our strongest XV most weeks then we can push for “best of the rest”.

Ealing v Donny lasted 6-7 minutes beyond the 2-hr mark, I hope that wasn't the result of injuries... no-one wants those any time, but especially pre-season...

Afraid it was Islander - very nasty injury to Pat Howard caused a 15-20 minute delay. Had to be stretchered off. Fingers crossed for Pat.

I thought Donny were excellent considering they’ve only played a couple of matches. Their pack was dominant at times which is quite something given how strong the Ealing scrum has been. They also put us under a lot of pressure and forced quite a few errors.

However Ealing have a get out of jail card with their rolling maul which is a real weapon. shame we had to rely on it so often but when things aren’t quite clicking it is a go to option and they all count at the end of the day!

The real downer though was the Pat Howard ko, I love watching rugby but every time i see a player face down out for the count it really tests my conscience. I pray it looked worse than it was.

Trailfinder that maul is phenomenal it is by far the best I have seen in this league for many years. Clubs will have to remain squeaky clean and avoid the penalties, those penalties were our undoing.
Onward and Upwards C'mon Donny!

Pirates v Jersey Reds confirmed for Sat 27/2, with streaming option:

https://cornish-pirates.com/rugby/pirates-to-host-jersey-in-warm-up-encounter/

It'll be Pirates' first hit-out, with Blues & Ampthill having got going yesterday. Richmond face Ealing next Saturday. Hartpury have trained with Gloucester and stated on Twitter that 'something more competitive' is planned with Gloucester towards the end of the coming week. Not sure about Nottingham...

Ealing Trailfinders team to play Richmond in a pre-season friendly on Saturday 27th February at the Athletic Ground: A relatively young squad, and it looks like the presumptive starters are all taking a break. Interesting to see that Harry Casson is playing, as that would tell me that (unless he is coming back from an injury) he has been pipped to his shirt by some of the newcomers.

15 Luke Daniels 14 Charly Tchen 13 Bobby Beattie 12 Steven Shingler (c) 11 James Cordy Redden 10 Declan Raubenheimer 9 Jordan Burns 1 Elliot Chilvers 2 Michael Van Vuuren 3 Lewis Thiede 4 Ben West 5 Harry Casson 6 Shane Buckley 7 Harry Dugmore 8 Simon Uzokwe

Replacements:

Cameron Terry, Ben Carlile, Harry Seward, Abongile Nonkontwana, Matt Cannon, Josh Taylor, Nathan Fowles, Dan HisHuckleberrys, James Bourton, Marcus Kershaw.

7-21 at ht. Very late try puts a different slant on things. Not sure Sarries are worth that kind of lead.
Oh well.

Departures | Ports of Jersey (jerseyairport.com)
The only flight leaving Jersey today.
Civilization clearly breaking down - absolutely no Liberation Ale available airside so my mate will have to settle for Jersey Toffee/Fudge. Gorgeous weather in St Ouen today.
