Bit of a weird one for me as I thought he was being prepped as a successor for Rayer, when he decides to call it a day. There isn’t that same progress opportunity at Coventry.

No. Of course there isn't the same opportunity for progression at or from  Coventry.

The opportunity to stay at Bedford, become head coach, and continue for 30 years until he takes his pension, at a club where  ambition means to stay where they are.

Or, the opportunity to move to a club which has shown ambition after rejoining the championship, and where his immediate predecessor has just been recognised by the RFU and promoted to coaching in the same role at international level.

Coventry didn't want to lose Louis Deacon, at no notice, but have passed h on with the blessings of the club, and with congratulations on his recognition and promotion.
Bedford? Less so.
Ambition is wasted without capability.  We once had our time in the sun, but we we’re burned by the harsh world of finance (or lack of it).

If I remember correctly  Cov were sniffing around at the time, hoping to sneak in to AD1, on the back of our misfortune.

Of course we would love to be there again, under the right circumstances, as would all Champ sides.  However we are chilled and realistic, hence don’t bang on about ‘ambition’ anymore, at least not until a Billionaire steps up.

The ambition of any club should surely reflect their context and history. I think Cov have every right to be ambitious. They are  from a proper City with a huge potential support base and I see no reason why they couldn't join Saints & Tiggers in the top flight if they got the right funding and management. If the lad from Trailfinders or someone similar took control I'm almost certain of it. Jersey has a similar context to Amps and both probably punch above their weight and will lose their best players each year but imo add hugely to the standard of rugby in the Championship. Room for both imo.

Dont kick it. Pick it up and GO FORWARD.

With respect to London Welsh, they won promotion by way of the ridiculous play off system that enables a team finishing fourth across the season to win by an agregate score, so I can't imagine they were anything like prepared for what was to follow.

You mean the type of Jersey pack that regularly produced players who moved up to the premiership and often gained international caps - doesn't sound too dreadful to me.

Exactly my point 🤦🏻‍♂️ … the best pack in the division! As a Jersey fan I would have thought that would sound dreadful to you!

Highly respected ex-Pirates player and now assistant forward coach Chris Morgan has left the club to take up an academy coaching role with premiership side Worcester Warriors.
Chris who made over 200 appearances for the pirates including 4 seasons as captain and has made a very impressive start to his coaching career will be greatly missed down at the Mennaye.

I have always rated Billy Harding and he is one of the best hookers in the Championship. He has an  excellent  skill set  and is a strong defensive player. He will thrive at Ampthill in my opinion.
Ambition should be made of sterner stuff.

Two lists of players for the price of one today on the official Coventry rugby site.
First the list of academy players
Then the list of DRs for this season, from a variety of clubs, primarily Sale Sharks...

10 Saints to Blues, 8 from before with 2 additions.

Happy with the 8 retentions and it really gives Blues a decent addition to the core squad of 24.

Faces from last season; Prowse, Newman, Tupai, Litchfield, Callum Burns, Dani Long-Martinez, Ethan Grayson and Josh Gillespie.

In addition to these players, we are pleased to welcome Bedford School’s Kayde Sylvester and fellow back row option Duane Willemsen

Jamie Elliott (ex Saints and Blues) is in Blues squad for Ampthill, who had been training with us for a few weeks but may just be a trialist.

That is a real shame for Billy Harding . I watched him play several times pre Covid for London Scottish. Not an excuse on his behalf but not having played competitve rugby for that period of time and joining a new club must be very daunting.

Hopefully he will come through for Ampthill and get back to form. The very best hookers in the world occasionally have an 'off day' . This was recently evident during the Lions tour. With the hookers missing the jumper on several occasions. We all know the complexity of all of the elements to complete a successful throw in.

Ambition should be made of sterner stuff.

I watched Steve Borthwick "test" his hooker's lineout throws before the match at St Peter yesterday and it was real masterclass. Steve stood on top of a big step-ladder on the touchline with arms fully outstretched so he was reaching the objective height of the throw and made the hooker throw repeatedly from the standard 2/4/6 positions on the field. He kept them at it until they were faultless.
