Ampthill continue with their style of announcing new signings in little slices. Today they welcome prop Harry Seward and scrum half Ewan Finley on loan for the season from Ealing Trailfinders.

Bedford sign Ampthill fly half (and captain) Louis Grimoldby. Always good to nick one of your neighbours best players!

Bluesman 11 ......... be really careful what you wish for re: "nicking from neighbours" statement. Just announced that Alex Rae has left with immediate effect to take up the Forwards Coach role with Coventry. From the Bedford statement, they clearly aren't best pleased with the timing, which is understandable from a pre-season and season plans point of view. And Coventry would no doubt have said the same when Louis Deacon left them earlier in the month. So they've acted pretty quickly. Guess one of those where no-one is best pleased........ but have to move on.

Brilliant signing by Cov - a hugely talented player and coach, a true leader of rugby players and a top bloke who is always welcome in St Ouens.

Quite right CC. Just a shame it took him so long to come back home. Better late than never though.

Yes the Bedford press release did not make it sound like he leaves with our best wishes. Surely Coventry must’ve had to buy out his contract too? He was highly regarded at Jersey, but not sure our pack has improved under him; it’s always one of the weakest in the league.

Grimoldby certainly has improved. He used to play for Richmond about six years ago,as dual registered from Harlequins. He was a good kicker out of hand, but a bit slow. Much better now.

It is getting more like the final transfer day in the football every day. I still think Ampthill could announce his replacement next week. Owen Farrell has been very quiet of late………….

Bit of a weird one for me as I thought he was being prepped as a successor for Rayer, when he decides to call it a day. There isn’t that same progress opportunity at Coventry.
I think the frustration would be a coach who has been coaching all the new players in setting the line out etc. goes in the pre-season to a rival club, meaning they have to start again!

No. Of course there isn't the same opportunity for progression at or from Coventry.
The opportunity to stay at Bedford, become head coach, and continue for 30 years until he takes his pension, at a club where ambition means to stay where they are.
Or, the opportunity to move to a club which has shown ambition after rejoining the championship, and where his immediate predecessor has just been recognised by the RFU and promoted to coaching in the same role at international level.
Coventry didn't want to lose Louis Deacon, at no notice, but have passed h on with the blessings of the club, and with congratulations on his recognition and promotion. Bedford? Less so.

It would seem that Blues are more disappointed the way Coventry handled it. It looks like they announced it asap rather than the usual approach of both clubs being prepared to make the announcements. Nothing is on the Blues website which suggests being caught off guard.
Of course Blues has nothing going for it… they haven’t had a coach go on to international recognition in the men’s game - Nick Walshe U20s. Also with access to Saints (currently) seeing different methods and techniques at a more elite level can’t be bad. Then Coventry haven’t been know to ditch coaches 5 mins after joining… Pritchard, Sharp, plus more.
Anyway he did a good job without it being outstanding but I would say that is partly down to the type of player we generally recruit isn’t going to generate the best pack in the division but it wasn’t the worst as mentioned above. Hope he doesn’t create a Jersey pack of a few years ago for you.

You mean the type of Jersey pack that regularly produced players who moved up to the premiership and often gained international caps - doesn't sound too dreadful to me.

No he means the type of Jersey pack who on several occasions were too powerful for Bedford and underpinned several important victories... before we opened up and allowed Blues a last-gasp 39-37 home win on Boxing Day...

I'm sure at Coventry we'll be looking for the sort of pack that suits the game of 2022, not the past of Jersey or Bedford.

I’m pretty sure this was meant as a compliment to the Jersey pack, ie he hopes A Rae doesn’t turn Coventry’s pack into the dominant pack in the league.
To the post that mentioned Cov’s ambitions, what are these? They are likely to be a mainstay in the championship, as per Bedford. Any more than this are delusions of grandeur I’m afraid.
