starting a new thread due to popular demand, but did anyone else notice this absolutely scathing broadside from Nottingham aimed at the RFU?

Impossible to disagree with any of it. He deserves credit for saying publicly what many supporters think.

While it is hard to disagree with the criticism, it does not put forward that much in forward-looking plans. We need to hear what exactly the clubs want now in the current circumstances and how they themselves are going to work to promote the Championship.

Have to agree with everything he said.
Part of the problem seems to be that the Championship clubs don't have a coherent strategy. Some clubs are happy where they are, some aspire to promotion. But all clubs are struggling financially (apart maybe from Ealing) and it's hard to see a sustainable way forward. Ring fencing is here in everything but name and where is the incentive for the backers at clubs like Donny and Pirates to keep throwing money at stadia and squads?
I have nothing against Ealing, I admire what they've done; but this season seems designed to get them into the Premiership (just as last season was designed to get Saracens back up). Having promotion from The Champ last season was a joke - it was so truncated that it was meaningless. Why did the same Covid related reasons for not having relegation from The Prem not apply to promotion from The Champ?
Why isn't there a meaningful cup competition? A competition between the squads that play in The Prem Cup and The Champ teams would create excitement and much needed revenue.
Why don't the RFU acknowledge the constant supply of premiership (and International) players coming through the championship?
This reinforces many people's opinion that The Championship is being deliberately sidelined and the RFU seem intent on destroying it.

Cannot argue with any of this, but to get change we need buy in from the clubs further down the pyramid and there in lies the tricky bit.
An angle could be from the community side of the game. Rugby is supposed to be about inclusion and building itself within communities, so what have/are the RFU doing to support this in our towns, villages and schools? By the sounds of things, not enough. They leave it to clubs like Nottingham getting together with other sports and let them all foot the bill. Surely, the governing body should be doing more at grass roots level and if you want to get the support of those further down the pyramid, then this might be the best angle.

Slow down.

No one has confirmed the structure of the Championship.
Of the current 11, one is to be promoted.
Leaves 10.
Scottish might join Super 6.
Leaves nine.

But will the powers that be have a 10, 12, 14 or 16 team league.
Most likely 14 requiring a minimum 4 teams being promoted from National 1.

National 1 will be 14 teams (currently 15, maybe 11 left) so three teams at least will come up.

Leaving 29 clubs and 28 places in National 2. BUT a third National 2 is coming. So 13 clubs need to be promoted from Regional Premiers.

This being Rugby and CoVid World will change by 1st March.

Correct no one has confirmed structure. Cannot see the Scots 'plan' happening so there will be 10 teams left. Will the 4th best team in Nat 1 be strong enough to play the top teams in the Champ? I think more likely they will get to 14 teams over two seasons or stick with 12 and some kind of improved format cup competition. Not sure Nottingham are the prime example of spreading rugby to the 'towns, villages and clubs' Their first team squad comprises a number of cheap students from Nottingham Trent and dual reg players from Tigers. Not heard they run anything other than a first team squad.

“Some kind of improved format cup competition “……therein lies the rub. Unless any nascent new format includes sides from outside the Championship, it will just be another rerun of unwanted additional games between clubs who are very familiar with each other.
The halcyon days of the B&I Cup with its trips to the other Celtic nations are but a dim and distant memory.

Various comments on likely promotion to the Championship - eg whether 4th best side in National 1 will be good enough for the Championship - appear to ignore RFU Regulation 13, specifically 13.2.6 (principles of promotion for the end of 2021/22 season) which states at (b) “ Level 3: subject to Regulation 5, the top Club in Level 3 shall be promoted to Level 2 or, if notified by the Committee, the second to top Club in addition to the top Club;”
In other words, no more than 2 clubs to be promoted from National 1. Not aware that this regulation has been changed (although presumably it could be…..) so it would appear that National 1 clubs are playing for one or possibly two promotion spaces. Clearly National 1 clubs would also like this clarified ASAP!

Those regulations change every season. They have also been changed mid-season at the whim of the championship in the past.

Agree Camquin - rules can be re-written to suit. Whatever the Championship decides (if they ever do) then the top 1, 2,3, 4.clubs .... whatever it takes will be promoted from Nat1 to meet those requirements

I believe that information won't be available until Christmas.

It was known last season that Saracens would be promoted, and another team promoted this season.
OK Scottish going is a slight curveball.

But the 11 old farts should have got together in a room, or via zoom, before the end of last season and settled this in one meeting.

Not doing so simply proves they cannot run a whelk stall any better than the 57.

Merely pointing out the mote in the RFU's eye does not help.
I think we were all aware of that.

The 11 do not have the authority to make that decision

Repeatedly blaming them for not doing so does not change anything.

Agreed. I don't see why people think they do. It is clear that theyare compmetely outside of the RFU decision making process. You don't throw stones from inside the house.

well said ON - as if the 11 would have allowed things to get to this point if it was within their gift; one just hopes that the review process, due to be completed this month, does not drag on into the NY...

We know that Nick. I just like seeing the usual suspects come up with the same old pony ad nauseam.
As if the Championship boards could overrule the RFU - like that's ever been the case.
Ludicrous thought pattern, eh?

4 of the Sale replacements who help beat Leicester yesterday have all played for Doncaster Knights in past 2 seasons. Who says the Championship doesn’t help develop players.
