Word on the street is that Surrey have pulled out of the BB Cup yesterday ahead of their match with Herts. Does anyone have any insight here?

That would suggest that neither Club put forward any players for selection.

Hull Ionians are proud to provide the County Senior Mens Captain plus a number of players in both the Men's & Women's County Senior Squads.

Sadly there are very few players from Rotherham who are fit enough to play! Our team list for tomorrow shows just 18 available for the game. Much as I would love to see the lads turn out for Yorkshire, they need a rest, and our thanks for battling on through 18 consecutive games. Enough is enough.

Surrey changed coach and management during the season and tried the old-fashioned method of asking players to come along To training if they wanted to play. That generated 11 players from Level 6-8. The official line is that they are still in the BB Cup and will try to get a team out next week but nobody at Esher is interested in playing.

I am told Hertfordshire had a side drawn from Levels 2-4, so it would have been an easy win for them

Most players started pre season last July. To expect them to continue playing through May and into June  if they reach a final when the ground is like concrete and the training pitches are bare is an absolute nonsense and sadly reflects how little those on the RFU Council/committees understand about the physical toll of rugby these days. County rugby has lots of potential positives but none if bolted on at the end of an already too long season. The 15-a-side season should start in September and be done by the end of April, that way players get some kind of rest and there is a chance they may turn up for the following season. If they want a meaningful County Championship it has to be integrated into the season, but with league rugby now so dominant sadly that ship has sailed.

With all due respect, our Club has always supported the County Championship and, even after a hard season, our players are pleased to have been selected for Yorkshire.

I don't see how you can have a go at the RFU here? The County Championship  (when played) has been played at the end of the season for some years now.

You can never please everyone and there are some that you will never please at all.

I have to agree with Marigold here. The County Championship is dead in the water and has been for some time. Admittedly there are small pockets where it is supported but we need to acknowledge that it has gone from being the "stepping stone" to international rugby to a meaningless, unneccesary and largely unwanted burden at the end of a long hard season.
I can also agree with Sid in that it is not necessarily any fault of the RFU but it was certainly the move to professionalism that was the beginning of the end for a once outstanding competition

Blimey I agree with Sid.

Its clear if CBs are prepared to put the hard yards in and you know go and look at players playing for their clubs during the season and then invite them to join a squad you can turn out a team.

The issues at the moment are, some CBs see the CC as a chore whilst others can't wait to get in to it.

Then you have CBs like Gloucester who say we can't run a Men's County side or U20s because we've got less funding off the RFU.......but we'll run a Women's Squad? How inclusive of them.

County Rugby is a different kind of rugby than League Rugby and if you work at it you can get your squad to HQ for the final which for some its the pinnacle of their playing careers. Lancashire have picked players from Levels 3-5 for today's opener against Leicestershire and I'm pretty sure next week's game against Yorkshire will see a sizable crowd and a lot of committed players.

TB, wrong in so many ways - County Rugby is buzzing at the moment albeit with some CBs rolling over and letting the RFU throw the baby out with the bath water.

Like I said - there are areas where it is well supported but "buzzing" it certainly ain't!

I think it is less visceral if you are playing for East Midlands or Eastern Counties than if it is Yorkshire taking on Lancashire or Cornwall v Devon.

It remains an important part of the pathway for youth players of both sexes.

But for the men, outside those traditional rivalries, it is about as relevant as the Championship cup.

I have long felt that the County Championship should be an age-limited competition, perhaps Under 23, as well as Under 20 which would showcase younger players who are, perhaps, better able to add another 3 or 4 games to the end if a season.

The problem often lies with the CB Officers, IMHO, who want to have a show team to illustrate their success.

There was a time when playing county rugby was a pre requisite to playing for England, along came professional rugby, no first class players available and the county game seemed to lose a certain kudos. I know when I played, Leicestershire was very much at junior level with few if any players from the likes of the Tigers, a few of my team mates played for the county, but it was very much a case of old school ties to get a place in the side.

Just seen the Middlesex team for today's game with Berkshire - six players from both London Welsh and Hammersmith & Fulham, with a further four Hammers (and one from London Cornish) on the bench. Only one of the Welsh players would  be a regular 1st XV player, and the rest of the squad is selected from clubs at L7 and below.

Looking at the Kent squad it's a good spread from level 3-6 bigger clubs backing it as well as smaller clubs which I think it's how it's supposed to be. I know we at Combe a very proud to have county players and have done for years. I personally think it adds something to the end of season for players and clubs. Hope it continues yet wouldn't be surprised if it got binned

Club, county, division, possible v probably trail and then an England cap.
Touring sides played a proper tour, against the Divisions and the Universities.
Beer was 2/6 a pint and shops shut on Sundays.

County rugby is what it is. It is still an honour to play for your County.
Why do we have to look back at what it used to mean and why does it have to lead to something else?

In these days, County rugby appearances can lead to England Counties, that is when the RFU provide funding for the England Counties Squad. We have had players move on to England Counties and foreign tours and, thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
