Last week’s hard earned away victory after a 4 hour bus journey into Herefordshire has been reversed.
Huddersfield had 2 players (including a prop) debatably sin binned at the same time during the 1st half. Huddersfield’s pack had been very dominant in the scrummage. Unfortunately Huddersfield’s replacement prop had just injured himself warming up so was unable to enter the field of play. The officials decided that the game should re-start with Huddersfield having to remove 1 further player (thus reducing them to 12 players) with the game having uncontested scrums until the sin-binned prop returned. Luctonians failed to score when playing against 12 players for 8 minutes and went on to lose the match 17-22. Luctonians have since decided to make an objection and have been awarded 5 league points. Huddersfield have lodged an appeal. #wewonwith12

I can only think they broke a competition rule - the one about designated front row replacements perhaps |

Huddersfield had a replacement prop at the start of the game per the competition rules but unfortunately he injured himself warming up.

I think the issue is that on the first occasion Huddersfield were required to replace a prop, they were unable to do so. See NLR Admin instructions.

They was unable to replace the prop who was in the bin, as the replacement prop was injured warming up !! So went uncontested and dropped another player.
Why does that then mean Hudds shouldn’t be awarded the points ??

Correct Sid,
Huddersfield prop yellowed for throwing a punch after conceding a penalty at the scrum, the very next scrum on Huddersfield 5m line was called as un-contested. What followed was an exhausting 10min of discussions between the officials and management of both teams where the rules had to be explained to both Huddersfield and the Ref. Huddersfield confirmed they could not replace the prop. From then on (1min before half time) Lucs knew the bonus point win was theirs. We’ve always had fantastic games against Huddersfield and it’s sad that our potentially last game against them had to be decided like it was. They can have the moral victory and we’ll have the 5 points. |

Firstly it wasn’t a penalty it was a free kick at the scrum , secondly there wasn’t a punch throw otherwise I’m sure it would have resulted in a red not a yellow !!
I’m still unsure why the points have been awarded to Lucs as Huddersfield travelled with a replacement prop but unfortunately was injured warming up. As for lucs knowing they’d get the points soon as it went uncontested maybe that why they couldn’t put any points passed Hudds when they was down to 12 at least that clears that up

The rules state something along the lines of you having to replace your first 2 front row replacements with competent players. (Forgive my wording) or the match is forfeited and a bonus point win awarded to the non-offending team.
As embarrassing as it is, there is no rule saying you have to score against 12 players?
Our young squad will have learnt a lot from that game…. The rule is there to stop teams turning up to matches with already injured front rowers or them going down injured before games when they deem their scrum is their weakness. |

Here’s the bottom line…Huddersfield won a game of rugby and Luctonians lost. The Luctonians’ coach can smack his lips all he wants on BBC Herefordshire. The bottom line is he ought to be embarrassed that his laikers couldn’t score with a 3 man overlap.

Almost as embarrassing as the coaches of a national league team that don’t know the rules of the league they coach in?
Lucs knew what was going to happen and gave Huddersfield coaches the opportunity to change there decision. On the match card, there were 6 players marked as FR replacements yet they couldn’t replace the first interchange? You were down to 12 players for 3min?? Good luck with the rest of the season. Hopefully Harrogate don’t go to 12 today, now that the league knows our Achilles heal 😉 |

Ok Rules is Rules but it is the Law makers that are to blame here. The rule of losing a man if you couldn't provide a bona-fide front row was brought in to prevent any shenanigans from teams getting "mullered" in the scrum and claiming "injuries" so they could go to uncontested scrums. It does seem to have worked but when this was introduced the previous law (forfeiting game and points) should have been withdrawn or at least amended. What we have here is a clear case of double jeopardy where a team is penalised twice.
If this law continues to apply then what you are asking teams to do is take at least one "travelling reserve" front row to cover such eventualities adding further costs to match day expenditure. It needs addressing!

Thatbloke, in addition not extra expenditure it may mean a team lower down the pyramid has to miss game as they don't have a front row. Its a game to be played!

Agreed Oldman hadn't thought of that added implication - so yet another reason to change the rules. It would be a different kettle of fish if teams were still using it as a tactic to avoid contested scrums but I generally think the "extra man off" has solved the issue

A slight error made by the officials was that Huddersfield should never have been made to lose an additional player. The game continues, with un-contested scrums until the end, or yellow card ends but the match is void and bonus point win given to non-offending team. The match is still played.
If a team is unlucky enough to lose thier FR cover in the warm-up, then the team should hope not to have to make the 2nd change. Huddersfield’s scrum started to creak before the yellow card so going to un-contested scrums gave them a clear advantage.
Lower down the pyramid, the losing of additional player is implemented to continue the game…. But not at National League level & above. Every day is a school day. |

Fields scrum started to creak ?? You must have watched a different game to everyone else. Fields forwards pushed lucs all over the park all day.

PR10R - If those are the rules at Nat1/Nat2 level then that's even more bonkers than I originally thought. What exactly is the point of carrying on if everyone knows the outcome? Extra man off eminently sensible AND it works!

The man off applies to going to uncontested scrums after the required number of changes. Forfeit of the match applies to the first two interchanges (three at level 1 and 2). It is a pity that there was not a second team match in conjunction with the league fixture, then Huddersfield could have called up a prop from that game, and it could have continued under the "game on" principals. The regulations are set out in Reg 13 Appendix 2: Section 4 Front Row requirements and 5 Uncontested Scrums. |
