Russia banned from Rugby World Cup qualification, Georgia advance

Quote Russia will no longer be allowed to qualify for the 2023 Rugby World Cup, meaning Georgia have secured their place at the tournament in France.

World Rugby suspended Russia from international and cross-border competition following the country's invasion of Ukraine.

The Rugby World Cup board confirmed on Thursday this meant Russia could not complete their qualification matches.

Georgia are now guaranteed one of the European qualification places.

Russia's remaining opponents in the Rugby Europe Championship were each awarded four points for the abandoned matches and this was enough to put Georgia through.

Spain, Portugal and Romania are competing for the second qualification spot.

Georgia require only one more point from their final two games to guarantee the top qualifying spot and go into Pool C alongside Wales and Australia, while the second European qualifier will be placed in Scotland, Ireland and South Africa's pool.

This seemed inevitable, and the appropriate action in the circumstances.

As mentioned, almost inevitable Georgia (35 pts) will finish top, but intriguingly poised below that:

- Spain 25 - 2 games left v Portugal (h) & Georgia (a)
- Portugal 25 - 1 game left v Spain (a)
- Romania 22 - 2 games left v Georgia (h) & Holland (a)

Unless Romania can beat Georgia on Saturday, winners of Spain v Portugal the following day are likely to qualify for their first RWC, with the losers potentially losing out altogether and being leapfrogged by the Romanians.

Spain are in a bit of a purple patch at the moment so my money's on them as the second qualifier - which is one of those moments where I'm excited to see a new country coming in (especially one where rugby has been going for a long time but quite under the radar) vs Romania, who used to be a bit more of a force, and could really do with qualifying to reinvigorate the sport at home. Basically I'd be pleased for either of them.

Don't know enough about Portugal. Although saying that Jacques LeRoux is a Portuguese international at Moseley, so I know that.

Spain qualified in 1999 and Portugal in 2007.

Some very good games this weekend:

Romania 23 Georgia 26
Spain 33 Portugal 28

Georgia (39pts) & Spain (33) assured of 1st/2nd & qualify for RWC with one game each still to play.

The 3rd-placed team goes into the repechage. Portugal (26) lie third, but have played all their games, so are likely to lose out to Romania, who have 23pts & just need a 4-pt win away to Holland (who are bottom with only 4pts) in their final game next w/e... (when Georgia host Spain)

SPAIN END LONG WAIT FOR MEN’S RUGBY WORLD CUP RETURN

Quote
Spain booked their place at Rugby World Cup 2023 with a 33-28 win against Portugal in Madrid on Sunday.

Victory at Estadio Nacional Universidad ensures Spain will finish second in the combined Rugby Europe Championship 2021 and 2022 standings no matter the result of their final match against Georgia next Sunday.

Los Leones will end a 24-year wait for a second Rugby World Cup appearance when they make the short trip to France next year, where they will line up in Pool B alongside Webb Ellis Cup holders South Africa, Ireland, Scotland and the Asia / Pacific 1 qualifier.

Spain have had five points deducted for fielding an ineligible player - a South African who hadn't completed his three year residency - and drop to fourth, which means they no longer qualify for the World Cup.  Romania now qualify automatically, and Portugal move into the repechage.

That's the second RWC in a row that they've been kicked out of.

So El Mundo have now done some research and it looks as though Romania may well have fielded an ineligible player.

This would mean Portugal auto qualify and Spain back in contention for an RWC spot as they were only docked 10 pts and this would get them into the repercharge  group

What was that about glass houses and stones.
Does that mean Ireland lose their 2018 slam and trade it in for a wooden spoon?

They were simply following the lead set by Saracens.

Rugby World Cup: Chile beat United States 31-29 to qualify for first time

Quote Chile qualified for the Rugby World Cup for the first time after beating the United States 31-29 in Colorado to win by just one point on aggregate.

Santiago Videla's penalty in the 75th minute, which put the South Americans in front for the first time on Saturday, sealed victory.

The US had won last week's first leg 22-21 in Santiago.

Chile will be in Pool D at the 2023 World Cup in France alongside England, Argentina, Japan and Samoa.

The US, who have only once failed to qualify for the World Cup, can still reach France in 2023 when they compete in a final qualification tournament later this year.

They will face the third-placed team from the Rugby Europe Championship, the loser of the Asia/Pacific play-off and the Rugby Africa Cup runners-up for the final place in France..

Well done Chile.
Not a good weekend for US sport, they lost to The Netherlands at cricket, missing out on a trip to the T20 world cup.
