3 Spanish Speaking teams and 1 Portuguese team and none of the referees speak Spanish.

Obviously not the biggest issue In World Rugby’s In-Tray, but maybe fast track a Spanish speaker with the Same enthusiasm as the referee’s committee encourage ex players?

If we're saying that the Portuguese should be counted as Spanish for the purpose of refereeing language (which IMO is a big leap), then surely Argentina are dealt with by Italian, given quite how many Argentineans are of Italian descent?

I understand speaking Spanish as Portuguese is somewhat dangerous in either country - English and zFrench are a simpler option

Summer Nations Series: Bunker review system and shot clock among new features at tournament

Quote
A foul play 'Bunker' review system is one of a number of innovations set to be used during rugby's Summer Nations Series.

The series runs from the 29 July-27 August to offer warm-up games before the World Cup in September.

The various innovations are intended to provide "even more support to match officials" and help bring fans "as close to the action as possible".

They include a shot clock for kicks at goal and Hawk-Eye for replays.

The series has 15 games, starting with Scotland hosting Italy on 29 July, and features 13 teams.

They include Australia, England, Fiji, France, Georgia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Romania, Samoa, Scotland, South Africa and Wales.

World Rugby used the Television Match Official (TMO) Bunker during the recent World Rugby Under-20 Championship.

If, after two video replays, the on-field referee is unable to decide if an incident deserves a red card, they have the option to show a yellow card. That then gives a second TMO a chance to have a detailed look at the incident in more detail, with all angles available.

The "Foul Play Review Officer" (FPRO), situated within the TMO Bunker will have up to eight minutes to review the incident and communicate the decision to the in-play officiating team.

The yellow card can then be upgraded to a red card with the player not returning to the field of play. This helps avoid players being wrongly shown a red card, as England's Freddie Steward was in the Six Nations in February.

As well as the bunker trial, Hawk-Eye technology will "act as the independent video replay operator, to support referees and enhances accuracy of decision making".

In-game play is expected to be increased by the introduction of the shot clock which gives players 90 seconds to take a conversion, and 60 seconds to take a penalty kick. This was trialled in this year's Six Nations.

Other innovations, such as Ref Cam and Smart Ball match data, will aim to add to the matchday experience for fans, helping to offer broadcasters access to new angles and perspectives, organisers Six Nations Rugby say.

Henry Slade and Alex Dombrandt are among the notable absentees from Steve Borthwick's 33-man England squad for the Rugby World Cup in France.

Joe Marchant is included but there is no place for Exeter back Slade, who played at the past two World Cups.

Saracens hooker Theo Dan, who made his debut in Saturday's warm-up loss to Wales, is also selected.

Owen Farrell will captain England, who open their tournament against Argentina in Mhazelnutille on 9 September.

That match in Cardiff was a good one to avoid, it seems.

Most of the England players manage to avoid playing in it Paul.

I predict a comprehensive England win in the return this weekend followed by press conferences saying it's all going to plan.

Probably from both sides.

England orders, scrum halves told not to take risks, if they'd just let them play, any of them. Quirke should have been there instead of Care, but they think Smith can't do anything at 10 unless Care is there.

Smith needs to stop worrying about his hair and figure out how to get his back line into play without kicking the leather off the ball

See the previous comment.  Does Smith kick the leather of the ball when he's playing across the A316?  No - this whole kicking game from the half-backs is completely driven by the coaches, not the players.

Really and all you hear from coaches is they want players to take ownership.

Anyway he's gone at the expense of another 8 which I think is a mistake

Why do you need 3 10's ...you don't

Why do you need more that one 8.. well look at Billy's injury record ... you cannot tell me that Mercer would not add more value

It also helps that across the road, the forwards give the nine better ball, and the players outside him are aligned better, and the defenders have lass chance to get aligned.

A lot of that is due to the quality of the opposition.

I never criticise a coach for his selection because I don't know what his overall strategy is and I don't know the way that individual players work together. What I will say is that if you pick the Quins players then you need to play the type of game that they are suited to, the principle of scoring more tries than the opposition, as opposed to the Leicester game of not conceding tries while you score or the Saracens way of waiting for the opposition to make mistakes and then capitalising on them.

The Quins way looks best but doesn't win trophies while the other two win trophies but can look boring. If you are going down the Leicester/Saracens route then you pick Youngs, Farrell, Tuilagi and Lawrence. If you're going the Quins route you pick Care, Smith, Slade and Marchant.

The real concern is the lack of power up front. What has happened to Genge and Sinckler? They used to dominate but don't any more.
