Lions explode into action in the second half

Lions had an excellent run of eight consecutive wins at the end of last season and launched this season with two wins.

Lions welcomed Newport (Salop) to Westleigh Park for their first visit as Newport had been recently promoted to National League 2 level.

Newport played with the slope in the first half, and the wind at their backs.

Newport sprinted out of the blocks, driving Lions back, for George Boughey to go over for a try after 2 minutes.

The game then settled with the sides being well balanced. From a scrum, Ben Young dabbed the ball through for Zach Bean to take and go over for Lions first try, converted by Young. Lions again took the play to Newport, shifting the ball to the right with Bean going over for his second try of the afternoon, taking the score to 12-5.

Newport quickly responded with a scything run by Luke Leonard for their second try, adding the conversion himself to take the score to 12-12.

Lions retaliated with a driving move with Alex WilHuckleberryson slipping into the back line to go over for an unconverted try.

To finish the first half Newport kicked through with Leonard collecting a bobbling ball, catching out the Lions defence, to score under the posts, again adding the conversion, taking the score to 17-19.

Half-Time: Leicester Lions 17 Newport 19

Three tries apiece. A well competed first half, with Newport showing some excellent application.

After the break Lions started to show their class. Lions had a scrum just in front of the Newport posts, spinning the ball out to Devon Constant on the wing, who went over for a try, with Young adding the extras, snatching back the lead at 24-19.

Lions started to move into overdrive. Rampaging forward play gave Lions two driving tries by Nick Cairns, then Tom Williams, with Young adding a conversion and Lions opening up a 36-19 gap.

Lions again moved the game with some impressive open driving play with tries by WilHuckleberryson and Ed Sumpter, with Luke Boucher adding a conversion taking Lions to an impressive winning score, 48-19.

A five try second half for Lions.

Full Time: Leicester Lions 48 Newport 19

A gutsy start by Newport in the first half, with Lions showing their class after the break.

Eight tries to Lions and three to Newport, with Lions showing their class in the second half, but being tested by Newport.

Following the game Lions led the league table, with Newport in tenth position.

Lions head coach, Gareth Collins, commented: “Playing a promoted side at the start of the season is always dangerous, especially after they had a good win last week. With that in mind I’m delighted with the five points. We dominated the game today and only really gave them a handful of opportunities, but to be fair they were very clinical in those moments. It was hard to believe we were losing at half time having been so dominant but I was happy that we took on board the messages at half time and got the job done well in the end. We’ve had a good start but we’re not getting carried away. We have lots of areas to improve on and will continue to try and do that.”
Next week, on Saturday 24th September 2022, Lions are away at Luctonians, Mortimer Park, Kingsland, Leominster HR6 9SB, with a 3.00 pm kick off.
