OK, it is probably not farewell, but it is au revoir. It is just sinking in, Cambridge are not in National 1 any more. Will I miss it? I will certainly not miss the wind at Chinnor, that is for certain, or the cost of a burger at Rosslyn Park. But micro-climates and food prices aside, every ground has been welcoming, at least off the pitch. The crowds are not so large you cannot get to the barrier, or follow play. But those that come know the game and are usually happy to chat. It, as been a roller coaster ride, from having promotion snatched away by reorganization, losing our sponsor and almost going bust, humiliation at Rosslyn Park, back down to National 2, achieving promotion, surviving in a named storm at Sale, when Caldy were relegated by the last play of the match and being competitive last season, only to be beaten home and away by Caldy. Then this season, where we played tortoise to Rams' hare, needing them to stumble and catching them only on the last day of an extended season. So, onwards. A few new clubs to play, I am not sure that we have ever played Doncaster, Pirates or Nottingham. I know we have played Bedford in the pre-season - and even won once, but possibly not competitively. We have beaten at least half of the teams in the league at least once. I would hope we could be as competitive as Caldy, so perhaps avoid the relegation dogfight - unless the RFU reorganise the leagues another time. But, whatever rises always fall, so I am sure we will eventually be back to see some of you again. Though, National 1 now looks nothing like the league we entered. This season we played none of the teams we played in 07/08. That by the way will also apply to Blackheath next season. And it was very good to see Shanners as one of the ex-players watching the match yesterday. |

From a Plymouth fan
Well done to you. Cambridge is a special trip for me when I have been able to over the years. This year to think it took us 6 hours at the very start of the season to reach Cambridge to then take 6 and a half hours to move 16 miles in the final stretch to Taunton one week after, and that was just turning around as had reached 9 at night, the team bus past us as we were still facing the opposite direction. Good club Cambridge.
