While one should never assign to conspiracy, that which can perfectly well be explained by c*** up - part of me wonders if the RFU was simply happy to pander to the PGB and the existing Premiership clubs that are happy with the 10,000 limit.

The RFU could not get a nymphomaniac laid in a knocking shop, if he hadn't had sex in a year and was the only punter on the premises ..... bit harsh? Maybe but 95% accurate in my opinion ....

Are we always right to criticise the RFU which is, after all, an agglomeration of a lot of interests? Their hands are tied by the Professional Game Agreement entered into years ago at a time of plenty but made no allowance for a major income downturn. The Premiership is run by the PGB on which the RFU is a minority.

We were recently recalling a speech by Nigel Wray at an Annual Dinner about 8 years ago when he was booed for saying ringfencing was essential and that the Premiership knew better than the RFU how to run the game. That attitude prevails at PGB level.

Remember also that CB Reps on the RFU Council also have to represent disparate views from Junior Clubs. It’s far from the ideal way to run competitive sport but IMHO the main problem is the Premiership owners. If the RFU had embraced professionalism correctly and centrally contracted all internationals we would be in a very different space - a bit like Ireland or New Zealand.

The new PGA due in 2023 could be the big opportunity to reset the relationship. Let’s hope the opportunity is taken.

I am sure that Ealing has a reason for dropping this that seems valid to them. As a supporter, I feel a bit let down. My worry is the impact that it will have on the players and recruitment. If I were a player, I think that unless there is a clear concession from the RFU, then the "ambitious" line that Ealing has put out for the last few years does not ring true. Honestly, why build a £3.4m training geound, but then not put in enough seats or agree a groundshate to allow promotion?

I can not understand  why Mike Gooley has invested millions at the Vallis Way site and in my estimate around 14 Million not including the money spent on the professional squad and 25 strong backroom staff. Forty to fifty professional rugby players many in excess of £ 50,000 each. ( I have no idea what these players earn but I estimate that is the average package value. Accommodation and food etc.
I have been told that he now owns more than twenty houses that either back on directly to the ground or are in Valley Way. These properties are in excess of £ 500,000 each.

1.The CCH main stand and clubhouse
2. The Olympic Pavilion
3. Cricket Pavilion and changing rooms
4 Commercial Nursery and offices above
5 Largest indoor training facility I have ever seen
6. Seated undercover stand.
7 Second 3G pitch , floodlit.
8. Second gym four times bigger than the gym attached to the first team changing rooms.

All this but fall short on 10,001 seats ! Why ? I find it hard to understand to get this close and and be declined on a technicality that was cast in stone, no secret but a requirement for access to the Premiership.

Ambition should be made of sterner stuff.

They bottled it. No other way about it. Some vague RFU promises about collaboration and a "review" and that's enough to get them to drop a lawsuit that would have let them in that they had a very good chance of winning.

....

Could you detail what gave them "very good chance of winning" for those of us not in the know?

Maybe Mike Gooley took advice from someone more qualified than this trainee solicitor then?
