The Championship clubs have one vision, which includes their pledge to reduce the number of DR and loan players in a squad. But
the ten premiership owners have a different view, they want to control
the young players and those players need a finishing school. And the RFU is in hock to the owners, as if they pull out there would not be professional rugby. And
despite the increasing proportion of the RFU's money going to the
professional teams - it all goes into wages. Clubs cannot reduce wages
because the French have more money. So, professional clubs need an owner
willing and able to put several million a year into the team. In order to sell the second tier to the TV companies, they want names the TV executives have heard of. But, because they have never promoted the second tier - man of the current Championship clubs do not have great name recognition.

Unfortunately, analysing the problem is a lot easier than synthesizing a solution.

Very sporting of you to say that CQ, at the start of a month when your club is one of 2 Champ teams with no competitive rugby scheduled...

I visited a Rugby club at the beginning of last season and spoke to a recently retired , high ranking RFU official. I asked him directly did he think that Ealing Trailfinders would ever be promoted to the Premiership . He answered very quickly with a resounding "NO".

It would be interested to hear if he thought any club other than the three "brands" who don't currently exist as professional clubs would ever be promoted to the Premiership.

And I assume that your next question was 'why not?'. What was his answer to that, as that would likely be more informative?

The new Football regulator is restricted to Association Football. But only because Football is defined as Association Football. But it would take a single amendment, adding the words "and Rugby Union" on line 15, and the remit would be extended. |

The Football regulator is being created because the FA and the Leagues are not seen to be representing the interests of the clubs or their members and are seen as being in the pockets of a few major owners. It is also specifically tasked to look at parachute payments and restrictive ground conditions. The regulator will also have the power to investigate potential owners to ensure events like Worcester do not occur - because they occur much more often in Soccer. Why would we not want someone fill that role in Rugby. I agree it should be the RFU, just as it should be the FA in their code. |

Surprise, surprise. Honestly, the only way they will is either shell out millions on a stadium that isn't needed for the size or, more realistically, just go to court and not be fobbed off again.

On paper it seems a sensible idea but then I think of all the other Government regulators that are totally ineffective so I'm unconvinced that a football regulator will make any significant difference. I can't see that being any different in rugby. Remember the outcry when Sweeney appeared before the Parliamentary Select Committee almost two years ago and all the waffle that followed? How much has changed? The new-ish Government has more than enough to deal with without spending time trying to sort out sport.
