The Championship clubs have one vision, which includes their pledge to reduce the number of DR and loan players in a squad.

But the ten premiership owners have a different view, they want to control the young players and those players need a finishing school.

And the RFU is in hock to the owners, as if they pull out there would not be professional rugby.

And despite the increasing proportion of the RFU's money going to the professional teams - it all goes into wages. Clubs cannot reduce wages because the French have more money. So, professional clubs need an owner willing and able to put several million a year into the team.

In order to sell the second tier to the TV companies, they want names the TV executives have heard of. But, because they have never promoted the second tier  - man of the current Championship clubs do not have great name recognition.

Unfortunately, analysing the problem is a lot easier than synthesizing a solution.

Very sporting of you to say that CQ, at the start of a month when your club is one of 2 Champ teams with no competitive rugby scheduled...

I visited a Rugby club at the beginning of last season and spoke to a recently retired , high ranking RFU official. I asked him directly did he think that Ealing Trailfinders would ever be promoted to the Premiership . He answered very quickly with a resounding "NO".

Ambition should be made of sterner stuff.
