I may find myself around Leicester on Saturday and I am looking for recommendations for a game.
Lions v O.As South Leicester v Newport Syston v Oadby Wygs Belgrave v Vipers Leicester Forest v St Ives Are all on my radar. Any ones I've missed? I'm looking to 'tick' of a ground new to me and ideally one with some decent old Memorabilia to look at. Also the ground must be relatively easy to get to on public transport from the centre. Over to you. Thank you. |

The Lions new clubhouse is apparently very nice and they seem to be playing attractive rugby and they will be hungry to open their account with a win at home, seems like a good combination for an afternoon out.

I'd avoid the South Leicester v Newport game. We beat South 119-0 last week and I'd expect Newport to do the same. All due respect to them for honouring the fixture, but not that great for spectators.

Richard, Leicester Forest are my old club, this being a merger a long time ago between Old Bosworthians (Previously Dixie Old Boys) and West Leicester. 3 buses serve the club, which all leave from the same stand on Haymarket/Belgrave Gate near the iconic Clock Tower, these being the 48, 153 and 158. Will be a lot of history behind the rationale of the merger between the clubs, but am not sure about the memorabilia on show as it has been so long ago that I was last there (and very few will remember me) but am sure you'll find them very friendly. Everards on tap last time I was there, but Tigerburnie may know differently.
Hope this helps. Edited by WESTCOMBE RANGER - 11 Sep 2019 at 13:35 |

Been a long time since I lived in Leicester but I would suggest Belgrave Vs Vipers may be easiest to get to on public transport. Ground is on the main A6 out of Leicester. Also a good local derby.
Wherever you go enjoy the game

Belgrave and Leicester Forest are both easily accessible by public transport from the centre of Leicester whilst Syston actually play at Queniborough which is much further on the bus and a good walk when you get there. I go to Belgrave several times each season and always enjoy it and with it being a local Derby there should be a reasonably good crowd. If the cricket season had finished I would be going myself.

It *is* very nice, but take lots of Deet or similar to ward off the mozzies if the weather is nice. They are also playing some very attractive running rugby as a result of being coached by Gareth Collins. Leicester Forest also has a balcony iirc where you can get a better view of the game than from the touchline (assuming the game is on the pitch outside it!

South is the club of Harry Ellis and Dan Cole so might have some interesting recent memorabilia, Syston is the club of Paul Dodge, Louis Deacon, Matt Hampson. I played there as a junior 15 or so years ago, obviously it was more recent then but there used to be a picture of Deacon captaining England U-18s with dyed platinum bond hair at the old Strady Park! Not sure how you'd get to Syston's ground on public transport, it's actually just outside Queniborough but I'd guess you could train to Syston then get a bus to Queniborough and walk. Didn't Steve Booth coach at South lately? If its the first home game since his death/funeral that might see a larger than usual crowd as a sort of catch up.

I hadn't realised how close Belgrave is to Birstall, a club I have played for.

The Leicestershire one. I have been friends with their former captain since Primary school and I played for them on tour in Ireland, France, Holland, Bristol, Bridgwater, Buxton and Morley/Huddersfield, where I took them to their Yorkshire namesake. Great times and on the Bristol tour I scored my one and only try in the 15 a side game! |

Very much a one sided game. Full credit to the Lions for keeping OA's out of the match. |
