After reading the reports at the weekend, are the Championship Clubs taking their strategy from this very website!!!

Are we, in a year of no relegation going to see a year of rolling maul tries....... effective yes, but not good to watch.

Shall we start a count of tries from open play vs tries from rolling mauls?

Just for fun!

I agree the rolling maul is boring to watch compared to end to end open running rugby. I think that the ref should call use it after one static stop and not two.
Ambition should be made of sterner stuff.

Not worth watching 'up your jumper' rugby.

A Maul is legalised obstruction of the opposition from getting to the ball.

Needs to be looked at and laws altered. Either insist the ball is at the front at all times, allow defending side to enter from any angle or ban it totally.

Great to watch Saracens being knocked backwards by a fast moving rolling maul on Saturday though.

I would rather watch a maul than an aerial kicking fests.
Lets sort out the mess that has become of tackles/rucks.
Also can we actually coach our backs to take and give a pass. I lost count of the errors in the games I watched over the weekend. You expect that from Old Farts Second XV but not from a professional side.

Still rather watch a set of backs run in a load of treies, especially against Sarries.

And turn the game into that heretical rugby league? No thank you!

None of the changes would turn Union into League.

Perhaps you would like to explain why if a single player runs ahead of the ball into an oppo that is offside but stick 7 players in a wedge in front of a hooker with the ball so players are prevented from getting to the ball whilst being driven back is not offside.

Because the Laws allow it, simple as that. Whether the Laws should be changed is another matter.

I'd change the law so that in a rolling maul, other players of the same team must be behind the ball carrier.  That applies to the rest of rugby play, why should a maul be any different ?
I'd also limit kicks, not into touch, other than drop goals, outside your 22 to one per team in any given phase of play, so one kick can be returned, and after that you run it. This to end or at least lessen the utterly boring kick tennis so prevalent particularly at international level.Angry
I'd also change scrum laws: stop the clock when the whistle is blown till the ball is put in. Stop blatant crooked feeds into the scrum- free kick first offence, yellow card second.  And lastly I'd love to see the endless resets and faffing about at scrum time addressed at scrum time which halts the game needlessly, but for the life of me, don't know what to suggest. Confused

Come on Jersey........

The scrum is no longer a contest to win the ball, it is a contest to win a penalty. Do I think the clock should be stopped at scrum time - yes. Do I think that would stop the endless committee meetings by both packs, readjusting of bindings and stud cleaning at every scrum - No! If we keep coming up with instances where we think the clock should be stopped then we run the risk of becoming like American Football. Forgot who the ref was and in which match he officiated (was it Ireland/France or Scotland/Wales?) but you could clearly hear him repeatedly telling them to get on with it but what is the outcome when both sides are dilly dallying at the same time? I don't know what the answer is - suggestions please!

If the clock was stopped until the ball was put into the scrum it wouldn't add a silly amount of time to the game - certainly not the three hours it takes for an NFL game!

Stoppong the clock is just admitting the referee has lost control.
The referees have the tools to manage it - they just need the backing from the RFU and IRB to do it.
The referees do nto have a good record - they let the professional clubs invbent "the hit" and "you have got to take the hit"

Years ago when you came up against a stronger pack you had to get the ball in on contact with a clean strike to get the ball away. So the easy solution would be ball in straight away or a free kick. This would ensure both packs are set correctly or they risk losing their own ball. Back to technique over bulk....

Why, the maul has been part of the game since time immemorial and the big boys need something to do as well as the fast guys.

It risks the ball being turned over if it stops and the ball does not emerge.
The Irish learned to use that a defensive play - refered to as a choke tackle but I hate that term.

The laws now require the ball to be passed back hand to hand - you cannot pass over another played bound into the maul and the ball carrier cannot slip back. That has reduced the worst of the legal obstruction.

You cannot pre-bind - as that is a flying wedge. When I was a schoolboy we practiced flying wedges as a drill.

Offensively, you almost only ever see them from a line out close to the line.

There are ways to defend

One - do not kick the ball out in your own 22 and do not give away penalties so the opposition do not get the opportunity.

Two - catch the opponents ball turning it over.

Three - tackle the ball carrier befoe the maul forms.

Four - drive hard and fast and stop the maul earning the turn over.

The main reason we do not see wingers running is the nine and ten kick the ball away too often and when they don't the centres either drop the ball or run into a brick wall without looking for alternatives.

If there was a change in the "Law" banning lifting it wouldn't be as easy to set up a maul & easier to defend. The current law makes the jumper a protected species because you can't touch any of the lift unit until his feet are on the ground. Which is correct for safety.

When I played lifting wasn’t allowed. One of my jumpers used to hold his hands up and continually flex his fingers as if playing an air piano. Opposition seemed mesmerised by it and 9 times out of 10 didn’t compete!
