Obviously the RFU have a cunning plan but I am not sure how they think it is going to work, To start with they will need to decide on the number of clubs in the championship. 12 or 14 currently there are 12 , with No promotion and Wasps being added that will bring it up to 13 plus a guaranteed promotion from Nat 1 again increasing to 14. Unless they have relegation leaving Championship at 13. So at team will be relegated to fit Wasps into the Championship, possibly a club that has managed its finances and is sustainable, we still do not know how Wasps, who, as part of the agreement with the RFU, are going to pay off the Rugby related depts of the old club or how much debt they have agreed to take on. What happened to the £35m bond?
If the championship goes to 14 that will mean the cup will have 25 teams with a number of the championship sides dependant on Premiership sides to provide them with several D/R players . These players usually play for their premiership teams in the cup. Some interesting fixture would be Harlequins v London Scottish or Northampton v Bedford. Having 4 leagues of 6 would mean 10 Cup fixtures added to the the 26 for the league (assuming 14 teams) that would mean the championship sides would be playing 36 games!! I would not presume that any Championship sides would get into the semi finals. Not a fixture list I would want for the players!! However perhaps this will be one of the reasons to promote the 2 x 10 team premiership leagues, as I said at the start of this post does the RFU have a cunning plan!!

A good piece of work ....workerbee
Do you think everyone should feel confident that the RFU have got this absolutely spot on and have worked through the potential problems you can see coming down the track?

Do keep up. Subject to legal action, Ealing going to URC, LS to Super 6+, or Wasps not finding anywhere to play, relegation is back on. In turn, there will be three down from National 1. Which in turn means Chester are looking at travelling to Redruth next season. If Leeds and Hull go down, they look to have 14 sides further North. It would also mean one side coming East. So the RFU wants Leeds to have a strong run and get above Esher. |
