Please note FHLH, I’m not advocate of that old structure, although it was great fun at the time (for some) However what really gets my gander up is how we have all let hand game down in this period. Pre to post league rugby has seen an incredible step up in the game, of all the playing standards at all levels of the game. We have seen incredible transformation of the game in this time since the introduction of the league structure. The physicality and intensity at all grades has been game changing. However, we the old farts, members, former players, administrators, supporters, whoever, are letting these kids down big time by allowing the supposed great and good of the game to destroy it. Sad. Very sad indeed. All the best ST Edited by Sedge Tiger - 9 hours 35 minutes ago at 05:46 |

On what level is a fixture list like that acceptable? The authorities should hang their heads in shame. Is it too much to ask for a structure at level 2 that matches the one at National 1? Friendlies, England under 19 & under 20 games. These are not in any way acceptable alternatives to a proper league structure, underpinned by promotion and relegation…..and don’t get me started on the blank weekends.

I've updated the original post to add April & May which are full bar one weekend. But, it still means playing to end of May for a tiny league such as the Championship. Allowing a week off for Christmas our league could have finished on 8 February!!

Yes - if the Champ does go to 14 as it's meant to, will the extra games mean there's no longer a cup comp? Or do a select few from 2nd tier still get 'golden tickets' to play in the Prem Cup?

That depends on whether the Premiership clubs are interested in continuing with the cup.

I have heard two plans mooted - as ever, I have not real information. But who has? One is that 6 sides will play in the Prem Cup and 8would join the 56 National League clubs in a new cup. And the other is that the cup will disappear, and the Championship would expend to 16, meaning no relegation next season as well. I seem to recall that way back in the day, leagues were 14, and there was a Cup |

Exactly.
Make the Champ 16 teams, and re-start the RFU Cup (excluding the Prem sides who can play with themselves - and you can read that any way you like). It would be good to see how Nat 1 clubs measure up against Champ sides.

I’m against going to 16, as there is no point having pointless games. It would widen up the gaps in the league. This may not be disliked by the majority of clubs, as before most clubs (with lower attendances) were financially better off, whereas now funding is much less probably tips the balance to more games.
The only way I can see 16 working is the one not liked fans and giving Wasps etc a 2nd life.

After previous clarification about moving from 12 to 14 this summer, it would be extraordinary if this was suddenly upped to 16. I hadn't heard/seen this figure until mentioned above, but wouldn't rule anything out...
Maybe definitive confirmation will follow during the 8-week winter (and into early spring) gap in the league programme?

Why does Wasps have to be in a 16 team Championship?
Richmond, Rams, Plymouth, Moseley plus the existing 12, makes 16? |
