I’d have thought it was pretty obvious. Today’s players are athletes. When it freezes the ground becomes rutted and serious injury can occur.

Most of the country had been subjected to sub zero temperatures all week and it would make the game a lottery but over riding that would be the danger of serious injury.

It is forecast to warm up considerably after the weekend so my view would be to call games off if there are any doubts at all.

ps Does Halliford have any news from Hersham?
Temperatures don’t look great with subzero temperatures every night thus far and forecast down to minus 4 on Friday night.

Low temperatures last night and tonight in Hersham but sun during the day and no wind. There is a pitch inspection tomorrow morning but I have heard nothing today.

Just had an update, pitch was fine for training last night. We are inspecting at 3 pm today.

Thanks Halliford. According to my weather app it’s going to be -4 tonight & not even get as high as freezing until mid day, so even if they give the ok today I would imagine it’s going to be in doubt.

Pitch inspection took place at 3 pm (24 hours before kick-off). Pitch is deemed playable so Esher vs Rotherham goes ahead.

Rothman, if you're travelling down I'd start charging the e-bike battery now! Come and find me, I'm doing the match announcing as usual and I'll be hobbling around on a crutch looking for friends!

Hi Halliford.
Not travelling I’m afraid. Much too cold to venture out of Rothman towers.
Are they planning further inspections in the morning?

No, I am told it would be unplayable at 0900 but the forecast is for sun and light breeze so that will thaw the top surface. As we have had only 2/3 nights of real cold, it won't have got into the ground.

Shame you're not coming, I was going to force you to drink soft Southern beer with no head on it!

On Wednesday I was in a Sam Smith's pub in London's West End drinking dark mild. That's a serious winter drink!!

How much did you pay for your dark mild? Sam Smith's used to charge ridiculously cheap prices compared with London pub average, not sure if they still do.

Returning to topic - NCA round-up on the weather slashing this weekend's schedule (by half so far)

Realistically the game at Esher was never going to go ahead given the weather this week and what was forecast overnight into today. I just hope that all associated with Rotherham hadn't already set off on a wasted journey when the inevitable came to pass.

Assuming they were travelling on the day, touch and go, I would have thought the players would have set off around 9am, not much later

I really hope that Rotherham were notified before they had set off. Terrible waste of money if not and I would suggest that the game really should have been postponed yesterday.

My information is that Rotherham (very sensibly in my opinion) refused to travel and common sense prevailed.

Was bizarre declaring the game on yesterday given the fact that the forecast was -5 last night & it wasn’t likely to get above freezing all day.
As you say Flying Ruck, I do hope no one had set off, players or supporters.
