Match report from the game

The Lions travelled to Sedgely Tigers on Saturday in desperate need of a win against their relegation rivals. Due to a Leicester Tigers development game on the Friday night the Lions back line was already much changed, but an early injury to Jake Sterland and head injuries for both Aaron Pope and Ewan Baker either side of half time meant that the Lions played almost half the game with two forwards in the back line.

The Lions started really brightly, when straight from the kick off the ball was moved wide and Toby Cousins made a clean break before linking with James Stubbs who in turn found Joe Brock. The Lions full back was halted in the Sedgely 22 and when the ball was moved wide Jordan Tebbatt was held up just short of the line and the home side were able to force a turnover at the breakdown.

The Lions stayed firmly in control for the first 10 minutes but were unable to get any reward for their dominance. A handling error on half way eventually gave Sedgley their first visit in to the Lions half via a hack through and eventually Ben Gregory converted from a driving maul. To make matters worse for the Lions Simon Johnson was yellow carded for bringing down the maul. Warren Seals converted (7-0).

With an extra man the Sedge scrum gained some dominance which yielded some field position for the home side. The Lions discipline was becoming an issue and a penalty from Warren further extended the lead to 10-0 going into the last ten minutes of the half.

Once back to the full compliment the Lions worked their way back in to the contest and were rewarded with a catch and drive try finished by Olly Taylor just before half time ( 10-5).

It was the home side who started the second period brightly. When Brock and Stubbs left a high ball for each other, Sedge pounced on the loose ball and moved it wide to winger Bert Bradshaw who outstripped the Lions defence to score from long range . Seals converted for a 17-5 lead.

However the Lions responded well and getting the ball back immediately from the kick off and, following a strong run from Aaron Dawson, Luke Bouchier grubbered through for Brock to collect and offload to Cousins who crossed out wide (17-10).

The Lions discipline was still an issue and they were further punished when Seals landed another penalty on 50 minutes (20-10). This was followed by a try from centre Matt Law on 60 minutes when he rounded Jack Edwards to run in untouched from 20 out (25-10).

The makeshift Lions backline, which now consisted of a Johnny Murdoch and Jordan Tebbatt centre partnership, continued to try and move the ball wide but without the required accuracy. The Lions did still create a number of good scoring opportunities but missed touch kicks and missed lineouts pretty much summed up an afternoon that the Lions will be keen to forget.

Head coach commented: ''Obviously it was a disappointing afternoon and one that was made very difficult by the enforced changes. It's always a risk to go 4-1 [forwards-backs] on the bench and today it made it really difficult for us. That wasn't the sole reason why we lost though - we made far to many errors and our discipline was awful, especially in the tackle and around the breakdown. You can't give anyone in this league 17 pens and expect to win. We'll dust ourselves off though and look forward to what is a massive, but exciting, challenge against Rams next week.
