I Believe that the club is no longer a members club, but is owned by a businessman Ged Quinn. There is a company that owns the Arena but Mr Quinn resigned as director of that and the club 8 months ago.
The accounts for both look very sad indeed. Pretty sure the ground will be sold, but I thought there was a sporting covenant on any possible future sale, but may be wrong. |

Exeter/ Twickenham Mk II with housing around - the residential / commercial and the sports ground meeting the covenant, even the S106 contribution

I’ve heard that an announcement is almost imminent. Strong speculation that the current stadium is going to be demolished. Land sold to a supermarket and in return a 6000 seater stadium will be built on the current footprint in return, this will then be shared with the football club. No idea what timescales will be but I imagine it will take a while for planning etc.

Does either club need 6,000 seats? Is there a risk it could be another - albeit smaller - white elephant?

From what I understand if the football club ever want to play in the football league their ground needs to have a 6000 capacity. I assume that’s why that number was arrived at. Think the football club get around 1800 for most matches and DMP probably around 700 on a good day.

I thought there was a plan in place for a sporting village on the site but that was a few years ago when the country’s financial climate was a bit better than now

You can play in the FA Premiership in a 5000 capacity stadium, apparently. Edit: and this seems to bear that out https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-beds-bucks-herts-65786603.amp

It's similar for the Football League too. Technically it's 4,000 capacity, but increasing to 5,000 (with 1,000 seats) by the end of the first season. This must increase to 2,000 seats after 3 years. Having said this, 6,000 is more typical in League 2 and Darlington FC are only 2 divisions away from this level.

Quite a few players have left DMP. The 2 to Preston travelled over to Darlington from the NW every week and with the reduction in wages it was difficult for them to justify coming all this way every week. A few have shown no loyalty and have just left to try and get more money elsewhere...fair enough.
The talk about ground sharing with Darlington Football clan can never happen. The RFU insist on DMP having Saturday for fixtures and so do the FA have the same demands for the football club. Saturdays game against Richmond was a great performance from a severely depleted team. The lads that turned out for DMP played with pure guts and determination. Top V Bottom...33:17.....not the hammering everyone excpected!

That will not happen. The club would make nothing from the sale as the Council will take 75% of any money from the sale of the land. This was put in the original deeds to stop Mr Reynolds trying to make a quick buck!

Yes, true. But I was making the point that you can (theoretically) play at the very top of the game in a league where players are on mind-bending salaries, with a 5000 capacity. Which makes a complete and utter mockery of ANY requirements in National rugby, and particularly in the Premiership, where verging-on-insolvent clubs often play in front of (well) sub-10k crowds. All a bit of a joke.

It's not beyond the wit of man to arrange fixtures so that both codes can play on Saturdays though. Coventry City and W*sps did it. Wycombe Wanderers and W*sps did it. QPR and W*sps did it. For example. (Edit to remove spurious word).

The Premier League sought and got a derogation from the 10,000 requirement under the Safety of Sports Grounds Act when Bournemouth were promoted. They have since enlarged their ground. The RFU could have sought the same derogation ......

Mr Quinn did resign as a director of Darlington Arena ltd, however the accounts for that company show 5 outstanding charges, each secured against a separate parcel of land on the arena site, registered to sw centre property limited, where one of the directors is a Mr Gerald Quinn. Worrying times as it would appear if Mowden cannot pay back the money loaned to the club by the former owner he may take ownership of the stadium and surrounding land?

There's no need to get a derogation. The Safety at Sports Ground Act requires all stadiums over 10k capacity to have a certificate plus Football grounds over 5k and any ground where the local authority deems it necessary this is from https://sgsa.org.uk/regulatory-support/legislation/safety-of-sports-grounds-act-1975/ The Safety of Sports Grounds Act 1975 makes provision for the Secretary of State (for Culture, Media and Sport) to designate any sports ground with accommodation for more than 10,000 spectators (or more than 5,000 spectators for grounds hosting Premier League / English Football League matches) as requiring a safety certificate to admit spectators. *** Often people mix up the artificial minimum requirements that the Premiership Cartel have with the legal position. The first is a protectionist measure for the Cartel, the second is protection for the publics safety. |

How, then, did they have a capacity of over 10000 (11464) when they were still in League One? It was subsequently increased further.
