Although not directly a National 1 issue, this affects the whole of Rugby given the current situation & also the latest revelations of the Newcastle financial position + possibility of loans from other clubs, and the stories abound about a club being catapulted into the Championship. Not to mention London Irish who are targeting a 2026 return.
Why can’t they give financial support to the likes of Ealing & Coventry to help them over the line? So yet again it is rewarding failure on the pitch but denying ambitious clubs who have been successful. No, they seem to want to resurrect the old guard, which means that clubs like Ealing & Cov will find it even harder to gain promotion. This cannot be right. Am I the only one who thinks we are in a parallel universe? Phasers on stun. Beam me up Scotty. Time for a song I think in advance of the confidence vote later this month. It has always been thus, back in the days of amateurism, clubs would not offer fixtures to clubs trying to rise up the ladder. There is still an element of it amongst some posters on these forums, I have seen clear examples where some would like leagues outside of the Premiership ring fenced, there is not really a feeling in rugby of building up, it is definitely about dumbing down to protect the interests of those who consider themselves the chosen ones.
Some of it class snobbery that Ellis Genge has spoken about, but some of it just protectionism, this is a rugby problem, but it also reflects life outside of the sport. To paraphrase Pink Floyd "money it's a gas, just keep your hands off of my stash".

I reckon Ealing and Coventry have inadvertently dodged a bullet to be honest. Why anyone wants to play in the financially and morally bankrupt Premiership is beyond me.
Having said that I can fully understand why clubs would want to escape the basket case that is the Championship. The best way is down!

I agree, the league below the Champ is the place to be for regular, competetive nationwide rugby that has jeopardy at each end of the table come April every season.
On the issue of Ealing and Cov not passing the criteria for promotion, apologies if I have misread or misunderstood, but was the criteria that had to be met not outlined and agreed to by the Prem and Champ last year? If so, surely it is not a suprise that if those criteria have not been met, that those clubs would not be eligible. Were they a black and white set of requirements? If the goal posts have been moved during the last year then that is obviously a very different matter. Edit ** Just found the following on BBC from Cov Chairman Jon Sharp which outlines that they had no intention/likelihood of meeting the requirements this season anyway ** Sharp revealed that Coventry took the standards test to find out what the club would need to do in order to make a renewed challenge for Premiership rugby in 2026. "We made our application fully in the knowledge that we did not meet the minimum standards, particularly the one referring to ground capacity of 10,001," he added. "We wanted to go through the process so we knew what it was like. Now we're in a very good position to work on a few minor things to meet those criteria." I read from Coventry that they wanted to go through the process to prepare themselves for when their stadium is up to scratch for the Prem conditions.
It seemed a way to understand all the issues they might face and deal with them in advance.

The issue with Promotion to the Premiership is that for any club with ambitions must be prepared to fulfil the criteria. Simple yeas but there is a sting in the new criteria, although the Premiership appear to have relaxed the criteria, you now have 4 years to build up to 10,000, however your plans have to be in place and planning permission in place. Again if that is satisfied you then take the risk that you could easily be relegated after year 1 back to the championship with all the liabilities you have taken on to satisfy the original criteria.
What has yet to be sorted is the fact that any Premiership club, who is relegated to the Championship will still retain the funding that they received giving then a significant advantage over all other championship clubs.

That is ridiculous, if you are relegated from the Premiership, you cease to be a Premiership club until promoted back up, and should clearly cease to benefit from the extra funding.
You wouldn't have a club relegated from the Champ to Nat 1 but still be given the funding (however minimal) that Champ clubs currently receive whilst playing in Nat 1. I'm sure that this has all been said many times before, however!
