Hi, as a  Warriors supporters for over 25 years I am looking forward again to a spell in the championship.
I was wondering what   should we expect from the standard of refereeing. Premiership games have their moments, I don't even know if the TMO exisits in the Championship. Thoughts  please.

No TMO, at least not last year. Most grounds only have one camera.
Very few have big screens, though I believe they may be required next season.

It is mainly young chaps being fast tracked up to the Premiership.

Most are OK.
But there is considerable variability.

Every current ref in the Prem spent time in the 'Champ proving ground' (sorry, I lapsed into corporate jargon there) before moving up to the top tier. Quite a large proportion of Champ supporters have pretty -ve views on refs, including some who'll swear that a particular ref has 'got it in for' their club, which is a pity, as I think the standard is decent, and expectations that they shouldn't make mistakes are unrealistic...

The biggest issue for me is that ref’s assistants often seem reluctant to get involved, which puts more onus on the man in the middle.
Given the interminable time some TMO reviews seem to take, I think we’re better off without them.

I would say the standard of referees matches the players. Some very good, and some not so good. In most sports you tend to get the level of officials to match the standard of the play, and the players nearly always make more mistakes than the referee !

Some are excellent communicators, whilst the odd ones have strange signals that leave the viewer bemused as to what the decision was !

Over the course of 22 matches this season, all sides would have had some poor decisions go against them ( and forget the ones that went in the favour ! )

Just like the Premiership, feeds into scrums are crooked and the interpretation of what is a forward pass can be generous. As cheshire exile implies, some touch judges seem to be there only for lineouts.

Thankfully there is no TMO. That would also mean there would be less referees available lower down the leagues.

Even with the multi-camera multi-repeat playbacks there’s still controversy over some decisions in the prem aren’t there.

Did I not see Christophe Ridley as Sir in a Champ game recently on YouTube?

Are there anymore female Sirs coming through?

My impression is in Nat 1 they give the young refs older ARs to look after them.
But in the Championship, all three are younger and slated to move up.

You do get Premiership referees appear, especially international weekends and European cups.

I think the standard at Goldington Road has been pretty good. Yes things get missed or they blow up too early sometimes but no one gets it all perfect.

It is harder to ref the championship as there is no back up. No TMO, and the assistants can be reluctant to let the main man know back foot offsides and forward passes.
