I caught up with EC at Nottingham in one of Caldy's last Championship fixtures in the 2024/25 season. If I am correct EC was there watching his charge who was the assistant referee in that match. So I suspect that the vicar probably knows what he is talking about.......

EC

Good morning. It’s been a long time and I hope all is well.

Just a quick clarification on your post.  I’m not sure TJs or as Rabbie states ARs do have coaches as such, but isn’t the proper terminology for that type of coach is normally referred to as opticiansWinkWinkLOLLOL. I’ll get my coat 😂😂

Take care EC

All the best

The problem is there is no one to look after the ARs!

I must be old fashioned. You have a referee.

We’ve been through this issue ad nauseum on the Wuss site a couple of years ago.

The law is that the player throwing into a lineout stands OUTSIDE the field of play.

This from the official World Rugby site. Law 18.22
QUOTE….

The player throwing in the ball stands on the mark of touch with both feet outside the field of play. The thrower must not step into the field of play until the ball has been thrown.

There’s even a little drawing showing the thrower in position.

On the line is in touch.

Counts for hooker throwing in as much as ball carriers in regular play.

I do think there is a notable difference in quality when we get a prem ref step down during international/european weekends.

Given the interminable time some TMO reviews seem to take, I think we’re better off without them.

I remember having a discussion about this with one of our coaches a while ago. He said that refs pretty much tell ARs how much input they want. May be different now, I don't know. They are now, after all, Assistant Referees, not touch judges - so you'd think that refs would want them to assist as much as possible!
I think the standard is pretty good. These guys are human and will have on and off days and will make mistakes.
In my opinion the best ref we've had at The Mennaye over the past few seasons is Sarah Cox.

The cry of "Every time, ref!" usually starts after thirty seconds.
Crowds do have a strange form of astigmatism.

Surely the crowd assist with forward passes don’t they? Particularly when they’re standing on one 22 and the play is down the other end 😀

You do get Premiership referees appear, especially international weekends and European cups.

I think the standard at Goldington Road has been pretty good. Yes things get missed or they blow up too early sometimes but no one gets it all perfect.

It is harder to ref the championship as there is no back up. No TMO, and the assistants can be reluctant to let the main man know back foot offsides and forward passes.

My impression is in Nat 1 they give the young refs older ARs to look after them.
But in the Championship, all three are younger and slated to move up.
