What is going to be very interesting is Hartpury.

How are they going to get away with paying this amount out to get tested??

As we all know they use the Uni's money to fund the rugby, in normal times they tack it onto or along side the Uni team.

With the state of University's and the issues they have, along with no sport what so ever for students , are they (uni) going to allow the rugby club to spend this amount of money on testing. Or are they going to be Gov funded, if that's the case its not a level playing field with sides like Ampthill and Scottish having to go one route and possible not be able to take part, but because you have access to a Gov funded Uni, you can take your place!

It never is a level playing field with Hartpury. They have state of the art training, playing, s and c and analysis facilities all provided by the taxpayer. I am sure some 'educational' fund will be found to finance their testing.

Presumably some help has come from Sport England. I can't see that the club would take part if they thought it would not be financially viable.
The Pirates statement says: "Following a lengthy application and negotiation process with Sport England, Cornish Pirates are delighted to report that we will be taking our place in the Championship 2020/21 season, due to start on 6th March 2021."

The 'help' that has come from Sport England is in the form of loans. No grants. So each club is saddling itself with additional debt at a time (this season anyway) when there is virtually no chance of generating any income except from loyal sponsors. As a purely business case, it just doesn't add up !

I feel for all the Championship clubs other than Ealing and Sarries, I think huge pressure was put on them to have a season. It really makes no sense what so ever, no crowds, no bar and no financial support . . no relegation!

But I am delighted we will be able to watch some rugby . ..

Our backer is a very savvy businessman and I'm sure the case must add up or he wouldn't have done it.

Where does the £120k testing figure come from? The lateral flow tests cost approx £15 each, if you have to test a squad of players and coaches (say 40 total) twice a week for 16 weeks, that comes to just under £20k, not £120k ... Am I missing something ?

Clieves a mate involved at prem club. The Prem and Cham have to use PCR lab based tests at £85 per test. During the playing season the clubs have to do 2 per week. Players plus medics, coaches, managers and analysts closer to 50 people per week. For Champ one month until season starts 50x 85x 4 = 17k Season 12 weeks x 50 x 170 = 102 k. Ouch!

Just as a general observation (so quoting you but not aimed at you particularly) I wouldn't have said savvy businessmen tend to get involved in sport! I'm also reminded of the advice to lottery winners to plough money into any club other than the one you support, because you're too close to it and lose objectivity.

On the other hand I'm sympathetic to the 'pressure to play' point made earlier in the thread. On any other level a decision to play by clubs smacks of exactly the sort of amateurish set-up that the Championship (or to be fair any level below the Premiership) is frequently accused of. It can't make rational sense so there's three options:

- it adds up in a way that mere mortals can't see (and if it adds up then obviously good luck to them)

- owners have taken leave of their senses

- there's immense pressure to do something this season from whatever quarter, and the bills are just going to have to be worried about later.

My money's on the last one.
keep the faith

Perhaps the clubs can gang together and demand Saracens pay them £50k each to cover some of the costs as they are the perceived beneficiaries of any rugby being played

Very disappointed that Scottish won't be participating but nevertheless they have made the right decision here. Why take on a large debt just to help Saracens get promoted?

Does this mean that Scottish have already played their last home game at the RAG before heading off to Esher?
