The attributes/ skill set required at club level , international level and then the British Lions level are slightly and subtley different.
The attributes that Farrell obtains over Ford , Smith and Cipriani and in abundance is aggression and commitment . Some of his covering tackles ( this can also be a liability, yellows, reds, penalties ) have saved several trys and changed the balance of games. He lives right on the edge of being legal but his commitment is second to none.
We have all seen the epic speeches by the Lions and anyone would think they were going into a battle of life a death . They call for the team to give way beyond the normal level of ' putting your body on the line '.

Farrells kicking ability, distribution and passing skills are almost secondary. I think he is picked time and time again for the above reasons.
Ambition should be made of sterner stuff.

At his best Farrell is a fine distributor and tactical kicker. I watched him play live against Wasps a couple of seasons ago and he ran the show.
Now, whether his best is behind him or this Six Nations was a blip remains to be seen.
I think he's become a figure people love to hate whatever he does...

Farrell is a class act and I love his aggression and commitment, although it can get him into hot water sometimes. All the Sarries players were undercooked and probably should not have been picked for the 6 Nations. Looks like they're hitting their straps now and they did a pretty good job of overcoming a very strong Ealing outfit.

Of course the biggest test for Saracens comes in 2 weeks time when they take on the mighty Ampthill. I am hoping they put out their colts side as they are only playing a small junior community side from rural Bedfordshire after all.

I don't think any team will be daft enough to underestimate Amps in future. They play at the limit for the full 80 minutes and imo will win more games than they lose at this level. The match against Jersey yesterday was one of the most competitive matches I've watched in ages.
Dont kick it. Pick it up and GO FORWARD.

As for Farrell, imo he is the one of the most overrated players in international rugby that I can remember. Agree with everything written about him in “the blues” post. Seems to have forged a career by being angry, a slightly above average goal kicker (his stats are really not that different to G Ford) and playing behind the most dominant pack in European club rugby. Didn’t think he was very talented during his short tenure at Bedford and still don’t think he’s any more than a standard prem 10. Wouldn’t have had the career he’s had if he’s played for any other team and does not possess the natural talent of a Ford/smith/cipriani.

Yes but he does have a nice house and a joint-investment company!

Whereas I appreciate CorporalCarrot's kind remarks about Ampthill, it has rather weakened my attempt to play mind games with Master Owen and his mates.

Amps result against Sarries doesn't really matter mate. They should just enjoy the match they have earned the right to play in. Once in a blue moon they will beat the top teams when your lads play out of their socks and the opposition fail to deliver and that's why you still hope. Amps are a cracking team and will leave nowt in the tank that day.

Cherub - any other year I would have said you should play them on the old pitch - but I suspect that is rock hard too, this year.

I am not sure playing at bowl helped Ampthill against Cambridge - I think you did better at ours. But it is such a great venue - unless you are playing in the middle of a named storm.  I recall the AR refusing to wear a tracksuit and claiming it would pass for a summer's day in Barnsley. We did get a rainbow though - but that photo was on my old phone.
