Well you have misunderstood then.  There were no grants to UK clubs.

So taxpayers money used to fund loans not grants then. Less cost to the taxpayer but a cost nevertheless.

Yes, they are getting paid back with interest.

Given the clubs were told to play by the government (without their biggest source of revenue), I would be extremely comfortable arguing the case for grants for Premiership & Championship clubs but factually they did not receive any.

I'm afraid I don't share your confidence that the taxpayers are going to be paid back with interest. Three clubs have since gone out of business and the others were pleading for additional time to repay the money a few months ago. The outlook isn't good for anyone owed money by these clubs.

And as a taxpayer I am absolutely delighted that government grants were not given to appallingly run professional rugby clubs in this country.

Cambridge Chairman has just emailed all members to say that the RFU have confirmed no relegation, with one team promoted from National 1.

Good news for the new boys Cambridge who will now have a season's grace to find their feet against some of the fully pro sides. Equally, good news for Nat 1 fans to have some clarity on where the goal posts stand at the top of the table.

I wonder if Prem 2 will indeed come into being next season or whether that can will be kicked further down the road.

There will be no relegation from the Championship. Promotion will require the champions beating the loser of the Premiership in a two-legged play off.

So, the Championship has just become a pointless group of fixtures that may as well be friendlies for most teams. What actually is the point of the Championship anymore?

If you want more teams in the competition just promote two sides from Nat 1 at the end of the season rather than one. By ditching relegation there is no jeopardy to any of the clubs and it massively diminishes rugby as a spectator sport.

I agree with what you say re the bottom of the Champ table being a dead rubber and detracting from the spectacle come crunch time, but I would say it will still be just as exciting at the top of the table for the likes of Ealing, Donny, Cov, if promotion to the Prem is on the cards (if that's what any Champ teams actually want, of course!).

On that point though, unless I'm out of the loop, isn't it still only Donny that would meet the MSC to satisfy the ground requirements for the Prem, or has that been relaxed now?

The chance of promotion is certainly an improvement, but a playoff delegitimises the competition. The winner of the Championship shouldn't have to prove they are better than the loser of the Prem. It is the RFU saying loud and clear they don't think Champiosnhip teams are anywhere near the quality of the Premiership. Which is ironic given why that may be.

I've just read that the MSC will be applied again this season which means that, as things stand, unless it is Donny that finish at the top of the table come seasons end, by definition any playoff vs the bottom Prem club will be meaningless and null and void anyway - ridiculous really.

Cov have increased their capacity to 5250, so satisfy that part of the criteria.
Whether they apply for inspection this year is moot though - but I'm sure it's crossed the minds of Jon Sharp and Nick Johnson...

Agree with what others are saying. Take the jeopardy out of the competition and you end up with most of the games being meaningless. Remember the halcyon days when when we had playoffs for promotion and relegation and every game was intensely exciting? This will undoubtedly mean a lot of punters won't bother and crowds will tail off for almost all of the clubs.

There was talk (e.g. an article in the Rugby Paper, I think) that Ealing were preparing to take legal action to challenge the minimum ground criteria if they won the league. I did see a post on a law and sport blog (admittedly only by a trainee solicitor and which I can't find now) that gave a plausible argument as to why the criteria were vulnerable to a legal challenge - are they really a proportionate response to a legitimate aim or an unjustified way of restricting competition?

Both the rumours about Ealing's intentions and the comment on the potential merits of a legal challenge may be well wide of the mark. But I did wonder why Ealing, having been given reasons why they failed the previous year, made an application last season without having upgraded their stadium. It seemed at least plausible that they had decided that although suing is never cheap, it might be a less expensive and quicker way to get promotion than rebuilding their stadium.

Since they didn't win the league we didn't get to find out, but may do so if they become champions this season.

PS: Just spotted the blog post I was referring to

In 2022 Ealing dropped their proposed legal challenge on the basis that the criteria were going to be reviewed, but the changes were in the end superficial with the 10,001 capacity criterion remaining intact.

That is true. And as I said at the time, Ealing bottled it and got fobbed off by vague promises (which we all suspected would be worthless). Had they actually pushed through and gone to court, it is highly likely they would have won and perhaps we might still have some of those clubs we lost around today.
