Lions’ splendid comeback wins the day.
Lions made the trip to Bristol keen to avenge their only defeat of the season at home to Dings Crusaders. It was a foggy afternoon at Dings’ home ground, Shaftesbury Park, with the game played on Dings’ 4G pitch.
Lions started well with an opening try by their fullback, Alex WilHuckleberryson, scything through the Dings’ defence and converted by Ben Young.
Dings then had much the better of the first half, with some mistakes by Lions. There was then a quick succession of tries by Dings. Back row Anton Welling went over for their opening try, quickly followed by backs tries by Harry Tovey and Matty Smith, followed by some dominant powerful running by prop George Kloska who drove over for Dings’ fourth try of the afternoon. Ciaran Donohue added two conversions taking Dings in for the break with a deserved 24-7 lead.

Obviously the half time talk sparked Lions into action and they looked like a completely different team after the interval.
Lions’ centre Dan Martin ran through the Dings’ defence to open the second half scoring, with Young adding the conversion.
Devon Constant powered his way through for Lions second try of the half, with Young again adding the extras, bringing Lions back into the game with the score at Dings 24 Lions 21.
Careless play by Dings conceded penalties, with Young placing the ball between the posts on 65 minutes to level the score at 24-24.
Another indiscretion by Dings in the last five minutes, leading to a yellow card for Tom Knight, gave Lions’ Ben Young the opportunity to slot the penalty over, where he duly obliged with the match winning score, taking Lions into their 27-24 winning position.
With no more scoring Lions ran out winners.

A keenly contested game, with a quality comeback by Lions in the second half.
Dings scored four tries and two conversions, with three tries by Lions, all converted, together with two penalties, by the reliable place kicking of Ben Young.
Lions’ Head Coach, Gareth Collins, commented: “We’ve only lost two matches since February last year, and both were to Dings, so we were well aware of the challenge today presented but desperate to avenge those defeats. To be honest we couldn’t really have started the game much better. We were on the front foot and created a number of scoring opportunities but just like when we played them at home though our lack of execution at crucial times kept them in the contest. We were then punished severely for our mistakes by their efficiency in the red zone. We were in a really tough spot 24-7 down at half time so the character the boys showed to come back was amazing. They took on board all the half time messages and deserved the win having dominated the second half.”
Lions’ Chairman, Ken Whitehead, said: “We made an excellent start with the opening try of the game, but for the remainder of the first half Dings had the upper hand. After the break – what a difference and what a comeback!”
