Actually Rob, there was Prize Money for ALL cups back in the day. It is only in the last 15 years or so that the RFU pulled the funding, which rewarded Cup winners with a decent pot.

Such a shame and so predictable.
Could have run all these pool games in December based on the half season table or similar. Then the league season would have ended at a sensible time and pool winners could look forward to semis and a possible trip to Twickers.
Anyhow we have two teams travelling up to Bridgnorth on Saturday so hopefully that lads will have a good trip

The weather in December is the main reason we're in this mess now. The leagues were supposed to finish three weeks ago with the cup starting mid-March and finishing mid-April. A lot of the withdrawals are caused by a) the long gap without a game once the leagues finished for the majority of clubs and b) the season now extending until the second week of May.

We're in this mess because lots of people think the seasons over because the league has finished, as it did for us on 11 March (ridiculous!)

RWB are one of the teams who've dropped out of the competition in the last 24 hours, yet they just tweeted:
"Disappointingly our 2nd XV Cup fixture against Trowbridge RFC II has been cancelled this weekend."

And still many on here will claim (as the RFU) that there is an appetite for Cup Competitions...

14 team leagues, 26 games, with a few rest and reserve weekends gives a full season from Sept till Easter

Exactly (for level 5 and possibly level 6 anyway). If there was another poll of the clubs (and players) now I'm sure that is what they would vote for. With certainty of fixtures and the season finishing for all in fine (!!) Spring weather.

Can the RFU learn anything here?

Yes. Stop all this obsession with Pools.

If you are going to have a proper cup, it needs to cover multiple levels, be a knockout format.
Start in September, end in May.

How difficult does it have to be?

The older I get, the more the RFU leave me confused.

RFU Website can't keep up 55 Walkovers on show but at least half a dozen not shown

Beginning to think this is a RFU masterplan, players want cups but when shoehorned into a end of season window no one wants to play in it.......  so RFU will say no cups next year as we tried but failed.

A proper competition structured season is needed with cup dates in season.

In that case the RFU should have promoted and managed this a lot better.
It has all the feeling of an afterthought.

Really - not seen anything to say the players want cups. It appears they have little interest at all.

The RFU want to reduce number of league games then add cups as a way of giving clubs enough home games to survive.
