Do Quins reach as far as Kent?

Yes they do. Kent is fairly evenly split between Quins and Sarries. London/Coventry Wasps (before they died) never had a look in.

Fair enough.

We're North Bucks so were technically part of the Wasps pathway.
However Bedford and Saints have the links established so Wasps never really got a look in.

Yes I saw an article about how things seem to have been quietly moving along with Wasps more than I and others had realised.

This part caught my eye:

It has already been agreed that the second tier will be expanded to 14 clubs next year. The roadmap for the club’s return will be laid out by the new Tier Two Board once it is up and running, having been given authority by the RFU council.
Research commissioned by Premiership Rugby and shared with Wasps demonstrated that Kent was the best location in England for a new professional rugby club.”

Good luck creating a club on £130K. Also, I wonder if the amateur club have any say, as it is their name.

With a sizeable ground share now sorted, I do still wonder where their actual squad, coaches and backroom staff will be coming from, on full-time professional contracts of course. I hope there won't be too much poaching from other clubs going on.

I'm interested in what kind of club they can build for £150k.
Nah. They'll offer a bond to mugs - sorry, investors - to make themselves the Richest Rugby Club in Europe.
Worked before... didn't it?

Well it certainly raised a lot of money so give it another go and if they can't pay it back then simply run away, reform as Wasps Mark 3 and get a lot of ex-players to say how Wasps are too big a "brand" not to be involved at the top of English professional rugby. Simple.

Rural Kent is Saracens. South London is split between Quins and Sarries but in reality neither of them have the resources or funding to make any real impact. Between both clubs they probably employ 8 or 9 full-time community staff that are supposed to cover. Middlesex, Essex, Sussex, Kent, London, Hertfordshire surrey & Berkshire.

There is a huge opportunity for a club to start taking London seriously. But who has a budget big enough to do so?

What Wasps do is not the point . The issue is do the RFU accept the principal that any future club can simply buy themselves into the Championship without going through the pyramid of league rugby let alone any club who has a previous record of insolvency?. This would lead to the principal of "Franchise" teams dominating the game. What would stop a major football club simply creating a Rugby section with all their funding and profile (which this is the main reason that the RFU want Wasps back into the top 2 leagues).
Any move by the RFU would certainly create a chasm between levels 1 and 2 and the rest of the Rugby structure.

Wasn't that what Newcastle United did with Gosforth RFC at the birth of professionalism?

Not really, Gosforth was a long established and successful club, not something created from scratch.

hi WB - anything further on your comment last week that: "Other reports show that RFU still entertaining the return of the 4 clubs, Wasps, London Irish, Worcester and Jersey being fast tracked into the championship."?

Sounded dubious to me, but thought it fair to offer you the chance to back up what you'd said...

I am trying to find the report on Google with no success but Rugby Paper did comment on possible returns to Prem 2.

There was an article in The Times last week which, sadly, I have binned, so this is from memory. The return of Wasps, to the Championship initially, was presented as a fait accompli, and apparently welcomed by a spokesman from Canterbury Rugby Club.

There was a good point made, I thought, that any budding young professional in Kent currently has a long way to travel to train with either Quins or Saracens, and that was the main point of the article, that having a Premiership club there would beneficial to the game.

It was also said (again, if my memory is correct) that Canterbury is the leading club in Kent (is it?) and that they were trying to consolidate in National 1.

East Kent maybe but technically, no they aren't. Blackheath are (even Tonbridge finished above Canterbury!). So of course Canterbury would welcome it, its not really impacting their area of Kent.

And what about all those youth sections of Kent clubs? Or the fans that might go to Wasps Wanderers over supporting their local clubs?

Saracens have their DPP sessions at clubs across Kent. Medway? or Sevenoaks. I can't remember. In fact it's far more difficult for young people from inner-London to attend than it is for players in Kent

The major thing stopping franchises happening is just how poorly it served Newcastle United.

That an all the evidence from years of professionalism as to how little interest there is in Premiership rugby compared to the spiralling cost.

I summarised this article in my post last Thursday... and your recollection is pretty accurate SD. It only covered Wasps, and it was any recent serious suggestions about Wuss/LI/JerseyReds that I was seeking. I don't believe there have been any recent reports, and even if there have I'm doubtful about whether they'd be anything other than speculation...

That is the key point Camquin and one that people running the professional game are unwilling to recognise - by and large the general public has very little interest in club rugby in this country.

This argument could equally apply to other parts of the country - For example a Yorkshire player having to travel to Newcastle, Sale or Leicester.

So if it is considered a valid reason, why aren't the RFU looking at filling in the geographical blackspots elsewhere?

But lets be honest it is just a sop to the Wasps.

I suppose, Richard L, that when the Championship morphs into Prem II, those clubs might be expected to have similar Academy set ups? I am asking, not saying.

I read, somewhere, that Leeds (or Yorkshire) already has an RFU approved / supported academy, and a youngster from Cornwall might be able to progress at Pirates rather than have to trek to Exeter, when the change happens, if he can't already. Plus there would be Doncaster for the Yorkie boys. Again, I am asking, not stating.

The place you wouldn't want to be is the Cumbrian coast, Workington or Whitehaven! Or somewhere like Great Yarmouth.
