This is what James While wrote:
Breaking: - hearing that Worcester have been granted Championship status, pending formal confirmation.
Worcester also looking to have Harvey Biljon coaching them. He's been slightly misquoted by SK88...

A travesty indeed, especially for Wasps. How could they be excluded, or will they also be invited?

there was only one 'vacancy', it appears. Maybe the tie-breaker was 'do you have a ground?'

Have they paid all their debts ? . Do they have a rock solid financial plan going forward. Have the RFU approved their financial plan. Is it possible to gather a complete squad of players that will be competitive.

Ambition should be made of sterner stuff.

"It has now been confirmed that the increase of the Championship (Tier 2) to 14 clubs will result in a reprieve from relegation at each level of the pyramid. That will be on ‘Best Playing Record’ down to Level 6 and follow on down through the Regional 2 reprieve club’s CB leg"

But, and it's a BIG BUT, have the RFU actually confirmed 14 clubs in the Championship next season?

Sweeney is the chief exec, and he's confirmed this during recent media interviews... I also doubt very much that RFU London would have broadcast this 'reprieve' information if they hadn't had a definite steer

Interesting that - as far as I can see - the original tweet from the journalist hasn't been followed up at all since being posted 24hrs ago. Maybe it's that national journalists are focused on the 6N rather than this... or is there some inaccuracy &/or guesswork involved?

I can't find anything "Official" to say the Championship will be 14 sides next season. If you have a link from the RFU then perhaps you could share it. |

Bill Sweeney on the Radio 5 interview (see link above) did say nothing had been decided about Worcester, and it would come from the Tier II board. Actually, it is a very interesting listen - though mainly for the other speakers. He admitted that community clubs are more interested in travel funding and volunteer and player retention - but offered no hope that he would do anything about it. Mark Evans and the chap from Gloucester both said that unless the Premiership cut the salary cap, more clubs would go bust. Clubs do not have to spend up to the cap, but if they don't then they are in the Newcastle situation, they lose every game and sponsors and spectators leave and may well go bust anyway. But, they are stuck in a prisoner's dilemma, all the clubs know the cap needs to be cut, but they know that doing so will cost them competitiveness, so while they have an owner with deep pockets, no club wants to vote for it. So it comes down to needing a strong centre to enforce it - but that is lacking. Edited by Camquin - 29 Jan 2025 at 13:53 |
