Friday 8th November Harlequins v Ealing Sale v Caldy Bedford v Ampthill Saturday 9th November Bath v Bristol Exeter v Hartpury Gloucester v Cornish Pirates Leicester v Coventry Northampton v Nottingham Saracens v London Scottish Sunday 10th November Newcastle v Doncaster Following last weekend's results, I can't see any surprises other than Bath v Bristol giving an indication of what strength the Premiership squads can deliver an International weekend - or whether, like the French, the league could function through the Six Nations. Bedford v Ampthill should deliver a packed Goldington Road with Bedfordshire rugby's local derby.

I'm going to The Stoop on Friday night to watch Quins v Ealing. Hoping it will be a competitive match, and Ealing may cause an upset I think. Quins were run fairly close by Scottish at The RAG last weekend so you never know, although that was largely a 3rd string Quins side in reality, and they'll certainly not want to lose on home soil. With Marler retiring from international duty, will he feature...or prefer the week off! Hoping the remainder of the Champ sides can give a good account of themselves, maybe a famous win for Cov is on the cards, you never know.

Exeter, desperate for a win, fielded a very strong side against Pirates. Hopefully Gloucester will field more of a development side and we won't take another fearful hiding. Going to enjoy going to Kingsholm whatever, though - always wanted to go there, so it'll be lovely to see The Pirates take to that iconic field. ------------- *Stalwart |

Friday 8th November Harlequins 38 v 33 Ealing (5-2) Well done Ealing, kept in the fight all night and back line looked slick. Sale 40 v 7 Caldy (5-0) Bit of a hiding for Caldy, managing just a penalty try. The wait goes on for a win this season Bedford 26 v 6 Ampthill (5-0) Efficient job done for The Blues, Mob missing their Saracens DRs and have now scored only 6 points in last 2 games. |

A good game at GR last night, Ampthill were worth more than their 6 points, turned us over on multiple occasions, but our defence was on point and we kept them out. A couple of class running tries and a couple from driving mauls won us the game. A great atmosphere in the ground and the marquee afterwards, the music was top notch and huge singalongs ensued, helped by the beer festival 😁 ------------- I want you all to line up in a circle and pair up in three's alphabetically by height. |

There will be dancing in the streets of Coventry tonight. Ok, Leicester may have used this as an opportunity to. blood a few academy players, but the score in the record books is what people will look back on and it's a long time since Coventry bas seen one like that against those local rivals.

FT Saracens 99 v 27 Scottish. Hadfield with 6 tries for Sarries! Different class, that's some beating the Exiles have taken there, but credit to them getting a try BP at the death. FT Saints 31 v 29 Nottingham. Archers had been 26-5 up at HT. They'll feel that could have been a famous win that's got away from them.

Bath 78 - 19 Bristol Also shows that it isn’t just Championship Clubs that get a hiding. Bath appeared to go strong with this one and Bristol used younger players.

If only rugby matches consisted of 2nd halves alone  Sale fielded a 2nd/3rd string side, Caldy out of their depth and now haven't won a competetive fixture in 6 months. I think they may be heading back to the National Leagues in due course if that trend continues into 2025.

Not in any way wishing to defend Caldy or challenge what you've written here. Sale in fact had first choice 9 and two others from 1st team plus first team squad members playing. Caldy did not make it easy for Sale and were rightly rewarded with PT and a YC against Sale.

Sounds like a cracking second half. Of the 8 Prem vs Champ matches, 3 were within a converted try and 1 win. Not including Pirates conceding late on to lose by 8. Considering all the Prem teams were at home, I think that’s a pretty decent showing by the Champ.

It might be futile, but it's generating a lot of much needed income. A sell out at The Mennaye for the Exeter game, and I'm sure it'll be the same when Gloucester come to Penzance. On the field it gives experience to players in Prem squads who don't get much game time (unless it's Exeter) and for Champ players they get to go to places like Kingsholm and experience big crowds in iconic stadia. ------------- *Stalwart |

Exactly, how I would have loved to have played at Welford Road in my playing days, this competition does not replace the old John Player Cup format, where giant killers get a shot at the big boys, but it is an improvement on nothing at all. People just don't get it, in this world of instant result and "what's in it for me" attitude, I am embarrassed to go onto the Tigers forums just now as those that like to bask in the reflective glory of being behind a winning team are demanding we put out more first team players to use the games as purely gap fillers in their season. If this game is to survive(and each week I am getting more and more doubtful) as a pro sport, then this initiative is a beginning, not an answer, but a start in making the game more inclusive.

I think the Prem cup has been quite positive and an improvement on last year. Is it perfect? No far from it, not least the appalling treatment of Cambridge and Chinnor. But for all the reasons Stalward just described, this is a big deal for the Champ players (and fans) who finally get their chance on a bigger stage. Plus there is a TV deal! Although the scheduling clashes with the Ireland vs NZ game on Friday night and the England game last Sat are nonsensical. Some of the results have highlighted though the disjointed nature of the DR system. Swapping players in and out depending on the competition does nothing for the integrity of the competitions. Season long loans would be far preferable imo. Re Bristol, see they had a game against an Australian XV the day before?! That is fairly contemptuous I think.

There's no doubt in my mind that season long loans are better for the club and the player. For example, I can't guarantee that George Furbank benefited from his 2 years at Cambridge but it allowed the club and player to plan with some certainty. What these season long loans have highlighted is that players not quite in the Premiership match day squads can continue with meaningful game time and instills the team ethic. Would be interesting to know what GF thinks! (His TRP interview didn't cover that aspect other than he played!) There must be many players in the Premiership over the last decade who have benefitted from season long loans. If only we could have, I have to say even though the 1st half appeared one way traffic, it most definitely wasn’t, some of the defensive hits by the Falcons in that first half were impressive, we worked very hard and looked like we would score on a few occasions only to be undone by their solid defence. Which is excellent news for Cov, but even more galling fro Chinnor and Cambridge. Listening to the new head of Prem II, I was struck about how he was talking about France doing everything as the 30 sides, and thought -yes well everything here is done for the good of the ten and sod the rest. I also realised that there are going to be Premiership sides without matches in the kock out phase - as at most 8 are invilved. Chinnor and cambridge could have been offered home games those weeks against mystery Premiership sides - announced after the previous weeks matches, which while not as easy to sell, would have been something. ------------- Sweeney Delenda Est |

That would be a good idea, surely not too late to organise as that stage is still a few months down the line? Or if not, at least play some matches against Prem academies. Have Cambridge or Chinnor approached the Army, Navy, RAF for fixtures during those blank weeks, or Oxford or Cambridge University? Maybe one of the top BUCS sides also if free. I saw that Cambridge have a fixture against England U20s, why not see if Wales, Scotland or Ireland U20s fancy a match too. It takes some imagination, but where there's a will there's a way, especially as it would bring in some much needed £££ that both Cambridge and Chinnor have talked about so much in the last few months.
