Subject: Trailfinders Cup needs postponing
Date Posted: 13 Jan 2021 at 08:14
Sadly this wll intentioned competition needs to be postponed immediately. The Women's league has been postponed for a fortnight so as to not add pressure on the NHS especially in London. The Premiership has decided to rest for 2 weeks. These friendlies are meaningless and any injuries that occur and require hospital treatment will add pressure on the A and E departments already bursting at the seams. It is not like either of these teams are going to struggle to be the top two in the league if it takes place. It is only Wednesday so lets hope good sense prevails.

Yet again Marigold you speak total sense.
How can this be allowed to be played. It will fly in the face of everything Uk Gov is trying to do. And before somebody says, its a warm up game not in anyway Elite sport!
They have called off the Womens and also the Mens Under 20's Six nations today.
So no way they can let this happen Its a pointless game and pointless risk ... The RFU needs to get a grip and pull this
It will also properly end up with a few players testing positive as well.

Ealing Trailfinders PR exercise is part of their campaign to get into Premier League before it is Ringfenced. RFU needs to have a word about the competition.

Financial decisions or public health decisions?
What I’ve said a few times of late.
It’s commonly mentioned, when it suits, about rugby and core values.
Time to implement them in a situation where financial values are top trumped.

I think they deserve credit for their initiative in trying to bring rugby back within the guidelines that the government have laid down and I suspect their main motivation is likely to be creating opportunities for their squad to play rugby in difficult times. If the government guidelines/regulations require the matches to be postponed or cancelled I have no doubt Ealing and the other clubs will comply. I respect Ealing's motives and initiative in this matter although I still hope Jersey beat them next time the two teams play.

I’m guessing you’ll agree it wasn’t agreed, planned, executed over a long lunch. The game is currently going ahead, I guess because the COVID protocols allow it. If something happens (players test positive) it would then be cancelled I guess. The other consideration is that Trailefinders (MG) is sponsoring this. And yes people book lots of holidays with Trailfinders (most of which are countries won’t even start vaccination programmes in 2021. I would like to TF Rugby mirrors TF travel values

I am not anti Ealing or this competition , however the Covid protocols for the Championship, and these matches, were put in place before the current C19 variant was rushing through the population, especially in London- from where the two clubs playing in the match hail from. There must be doubt if the protocols are still fit for purpose as they currently allow the Championship teams with part time players to train , many of whom i assume have jobs outside of rugby so mix with the general population daily.

All 3 clubs are full-time. The situation is definitely bad in UK, but elite sport is continuing for the moment.
Why should Tottenham, Fulham, Man City & Brighton be fine to play football matches tonight, but not the lower-paid f/t rugby professionals of Saracens and Ealing this w/e? Because of a decision by the French government about cross-border European games?
While elite sport is allowed to continue, so should this competition, IMHO...

The facts are all 3 clubs are full time and elite sport is allowed to continue. Another fact is these games are friendlies, not part of a governing body league or cup competition. They are unrequired extra matches that unnecessarily increase the risk of the spread of Covid because you have two normally separate squads now playing against each other. Should there be any serious injuries the players will have to attend already overburdened A and E departments in London. Nor is the game televised to provide alternative viewing for the cancelled European fixtures. I suggest both clubs could gain significant positive PR if they agree to not play due to the current Covid situation in London. Alternatively they play and appear to put the importance of a friendly rugby match, 6 weeks ahead of when their league is due to start, above any responsibility they suggest they have for their local communities.

With seven weeks (March 6th?) until the league commences, I hope by Feb 6th decisions are made on friendlies if the RFU stick to March 6th. Or if we are still seeing significant infection numbers, a bold, sensible decision is made.

Quite a lot of good in terms of making sure that these teams are ready to hit the ground running when the season starts, and probably quite useful for Eddie Jones and the national side in terms of the Saracens contingent being match fit for the start of the six nations (I understand Saracens intend to run out a fairly full-strength side). I would be very happy to see this televised more widely to get additional eyes on the Championship product, but that doesn't look like it is happening. Then, finally, I take benefit from this in terms of mental health. I've been locked down three times in a year, doing 60 hours a week of work and homeschooling on top of that. I love watching rugby, and I'm thrilled to have a couple hours where I can just yell at my screen and relax. I doubt I'm the only one. Given that all players are being tested every day, I see the risk of these people mixing contributing to Covid spread as extremely minimal. Roll on more rugby and roll on vaccination programs.

The Ealing academy players who are based at Brunel have all had to also had 2 Laterla flow tests from the Uni so along with club testing i would consider it pretty safe - The Brunel IUni positive rate (across the entire of the students & staff) is far less than the rate at my local secondary school (based on real numbers not conjecture)
If a professional team are willing to pay the £ for testing and follow protocols properly surely it is less dangerous than going shopping (and def less than getting on a train/bus)

This three way round Robin is in preparation part of the campaign but in the grand scheme is just a small part of the efforts in progress. Today a new indoor training facility was started on site at Trailfinders sports centre. It is the largest fully weather proof, indoor facility I have ever seen. The drawings can be viewed on the Ealing Council planning site . It is an incredible construction and England have shown interest. It is with approved planning and is totally financed by Trailfinders, all credit to Mike Gooley with no reliance on tax payers money and the project is actually in progress and will be completed and being used within this year. No false starts or misinformation, this is happening now.

Careful Rich that is deemed old news and you run the risk of getting this thread locked . I believe THEY will be go straight back one way or the other. The weak squad has seven internatiols with one player in the team who gets paid individually the entire budget of half the individual teams in the Championship !.

Gutted not to come away with points just before the half. Ealing forwards had the blinders on and missed huge space on the outside. :( A bit worried about the scrum dominance Sarries seem to have, but overall, to be one point down against Sarries at half time is no mean feat. I'm looking forward to see how the pace changes if/when we bring on Jordan Burns at 9.

Yes, certainly Sarries can put out a considerably stronger team, though I saw them put out weaker teams last year in the Premiership. I was pretty annoyed to see the following quote from Mark McCall on the BBC
"It's so hard for an international player to play in a game like this and not get frustrated at times - with your team-mates and with the opposition. But I'm really pleased."
What the heck is that supposed to mean? Good to see that Sarries can continuously manage to be unclassy in whatever division they are in, consistent form is important.

Good article in the Sunday Times covering this game and a real attack on the RFU and PL over the way that they have treated the Championship with the cutting of finances, the re-structure including PL A sides being totally ignores and ring fencing. Reading it, it’s almost as if the PL feel threatened by the Championship. The RFU are just too scared of the PL and are ignoring the benefits that the Championship brings to international rugby.
Well done Ealing, great result..... Donny, your turn!!

He did. Billy was a non-factor except when he knocked on over the line.

You can not allow Billy Vunipola to get going forward. He was often stopped on receiving the ball and pressurised several times 2/3 times by Rayn Smidt.

Yes, I thought Ealing were very good at keeping him out of the game - he was tackled early preventing him getting a head of steam up. Good way to reduce his impact.
Anyhow, he is looking forward to travelling up North to get some mud on his knees and elbows this week. Clearly never bothered watching the England Ladies play at Castle Park otherwise he would know we have a hybrid pitch and mud is the last thing he will be seeing. You would think he would do his homework before opening his mouth. Or maybe to confuse him we switch play to our AstroTurf pitch.
------------- Onward and Upwards C'mon Donny!

Sadly for me this is not a great omen for the Championship being played. If the full time clubs in the Championship, where players movements are able to be controlled to a large extent, can only manage one week of matches before a game is called off due to Covid, what chance do the non full time clubs, who have players who go out to work each day in general society, have of keeping the virus at bay. If ,as in this case, it is Saracens who gain no points from a match due to Covid and this prevented them from getting promoted, would they not contest this decision in the courtroom? Or would they, PRL and the RFU allow them to spend a second season in the Championship?

Perhaps someone can confirm - as Saracens mention the suspended players as part of the absentees, I am presuming this meaningless competition counts towards their suspensions?
If so, no wonder Saracens wanted to take part.
I am very surprised that games that are essentially friendliest count! - presumably they will no be suspended for another match as this didn't take place?

My understanding is that the suspensions are for league games and not friendlies Did all players sanctioned repay their appearance fee? It only mentioned the circumstances, games bans, Some charity donations and community work etc.

You may well be correct, otherwise teams would arrange meaningless friendliest to count to a players suspension.
As it was mentioned as part of the reason for not being able to field a side, I would therefore presume a player is suspended until his team have played x number of league/cup matches.

I’m looking forward to Donny v Ealing as I know lots re Ealing and nothing with regards to what Donny have been building on the pitch. I think Donny are a sleeping giant and with Yorkshire being the shoe in for relegation last season, they took “a year off” prepare for this season

No slight on Donny, but to be a 'sleeping giant' you need to have once been a giant. The term probably fits the likes of Mose or Welsh rather better.

This was covered by Ugo Monye on a podcast this week - apparently to "count" the game can be a friendly, but you have to have an appropriate officiating crew. Seems open to manipulation, but I'd guess he'd know how it worked.

I heard or read somewhere that Saracens in their defence of their players tried to argue friendlies should count. I believe the RFU commended them on their argument, but declined their offer
