Whilst it may not be common knowledge just yet, Ampthills financial backer, Mr Lavery is stepping back from the club at the end of this season.

The question is are they now self sustainable unlike most prem clubs to go it alone. How well have they build the club and business to run in the future?

That's pretty well known round here.

Time will tell but Ampthill has an enormous mini and junior section to enable a decent Community club to continue.

I am sure that Ampthill will survive as a club - it has solid roots.
However, there are many strong community clubs playing in the regional leagues.

The 1st XV will need to find a level the club can support.

Cambridge lost its main funding in 2010 and somehow survived and eventually reached level 2.

But other clubs like Manchester, Birmingham and Old Elthamians while surviving as clubs, are playing in the lower leagues.

Whatever happens, the important thing is people get out on the pitch and have fun.

That is good news for the 1st XV.
Everyone on this forum seems to know everything about every other club's finance - though it is often wrong.

What’s this “new tier 2 competition “ of which he speaks?

I believe the league will not start until after the Women's World Cup and then be relentless until the end of the season.

But we will get a 14 team Cup to cover the gap.

14 is not a good number, I would invite Army and Navy in to make up numbers.

There is going to be an issue with the number of games played if you include a cup
  1. A proposed 14 team league equals 26 games
  2. If we get a 16 team cup then it will be 4 pools of 4 which equals 6 games home and away which totals 32 games
  3. the winners of each pool will play a semi and final so the winner will need to play 34 games
  4. Add to that the possibility of the league winner having a two header play off with the bottom club from the Premiership (subject to meeting the criteria) then the final total would be 36 games.
  5. If the RFU add in Reserve weekends then a season could be over 40 weeks.

The Army and Navy are quite off the pace from the recent Blues and Pirates results without their best teams.

Personal view; Army and Navy non starters logistically and in terms of performance;
No one really wants a Championship Cup.

Totally agree the Championship cup is the worst we have had, maybe apart from the bottom 4 going into a mini league for survival!

Would be better to get the Irish A teams (4) and maybe an Edinburgh and Glasgow A teams (2).  That makes 20.

4 groups of 5, probably do 1 game and then reverse it the following year like the 6 Nations.  Then top 2 of each go through.  After 2 years you mix up the pools so you don't play the same team all the time!
