It was explained by one of our 2nd XV referees that for the 50-20 kick to be an attacking line-out the law states the ball has to bounce inside the 22 before going into touch. Last night a Welsh 50-20 kick bounced outside the 22 then into touch inside the 22 without hitting the ground inside the 22 area. If the above is true should this have been given as a France throw in not a Welsh one? Would be interested to know higher level referee's views.

| I don't believe the above is true... as long it bounces somewhere infield & crosses the line of touch between 22 & corner flag then you get the throw-in. Jonathan Davies & Joe Worsley were also referring to the "50-20" law on TV comms last night, rather than correctly referring to it as 50:22 |

Rugby League doesn't have a 50-20 rule long standing or otherwise. It is actually a 40-20 rule which is a lot harder to achieve than 50-22 ------------- RAID ON |

The law says the kick must be indirect, it does not say anything about where the bounce must occur. ------------- Sweeney Delenda Est |

Question - if a player is in his own 22 and kicks the ball directly into touch in the opposition 22 should they get the ball or should the defending team get the ball? ------------- Onward and Upwards C'mon Donny! |

That is right. I have seen a World Rugby clarification to England Rugby saying so. Kicking from own 22 just means you don’t lose the distance if goes straight into touch. That remains the case if it goes out in oppo 22 so you still get the benefit ------------- He's alright and he don't care; He's got thermal underwear |

That would appear to be the case. I could download the laws from world rugby site but everything else seen suggests that is the requirement. Only that it goes indirectly into touch inside the oppo 22. Nothing stated about where it has to bounce. A couple of websites did make the same mistake as the OP’s official but that seemed to be a misunderstanding I was on world rugby as a friend asked if Ewels was actually a tackler as he did not tackle the ball carrier  ------------- He's alright and he don't care; He's got thermal underwear |
