I so enjoyed my visit to Cambridge yesterday I felt compelled to post my appreciation. It wasn’t just the result which lifted Caldy off the bottom of the table, everything about the day was just stand out. The ebullient welcome from Chairman Tim Hague, the best lunch I have ever had at any rugby club and the uber friendly company of the home supporters.

I spent the match sitting next to former Cambridge second row Peter Hains. Peter’s fair and knowledgeable discourse about the game and all things Cambridge hugely added to my match day experience. Even when the Blood & Sand had closed the deficit to only two points and were pressing hard on the Ravers’ line Peter’s even handed demeanour didn’t change although perhaps he was somewhat discombobulated when seconds later Caldy winger Will Robinson intercepted and went the length to pretty much clinch the win for Caldy

During lunch Chairman Tim repeatedly exhorted the diners to drink up …. the travelling Caldy supporters certainly did that, continuing this pleasant habit in the company of 23 mostly naked Ravers on the way home.

The day was a perfect advert for what club rugby should be all about. Cambridge RFC led by Tim Hague did it so very well.

I did not think his refereeing was that bad.
He was let out in 2003.
